What determines a company's performance? Shape of the CEO's face!

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2011) ? Believe it or not, one thing that predicts how well a CEO's company performs is -- the width of the CEO's face! CEOs with wider faces have better-performing companies than CEOs with long faces. That's the conclusion of a new study which will be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Elaine M. Wong at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and her colleagues study how top management teams work. But they have to do it in indirect ways. "CEOs and top executives don't typically have time to talk with researchers or take batteries of tests," she says. "Our research has primarily been at a distance." They've analyzed the content of letters to shareholders and looked at things like how a CEO's educational or personal background affects how well his or her company does. Wong and her colleagues, Margaret E. Ormiston of London Business School and Michael P. Haselhuhn of UWM, wanted to look at another aspect of CEOs -- their faces.

Looking at faces isn't as crazy as it might sound. Several studies have shown that the ratio of face width to face height is correlated with aggression. Hockey players with wider faces spend more time in the penalty box for fighting. Men with higher facial width are seen as less trustworthy and they feel more powerful.

"Most of these are seen as negative things, but power can have some positive effects," Wong says. People who feel powerful tend to look at the big picture rather than focusing on small details and are also better at staying on task. She and her colleagues thought that feeling of power might also be correlated with a company's financial performance.

Wong and her colleagues based their analyses on photos of 55 male CEOs of publicly-traded Fortune 500 organizations. They only used men because this relationship between face shape and behavior has only been found to apply to men; it's thought to have something to do with testosterone levels. They also gathered information on the companies' financial performance and analyzed shareholder letters to get a sense of the kind of thinking that goes on at those companies.

CEOs with a wider face, relative to the face's height, had much better firm financial performance than CEOs who had narrower faces. "In our sample, the CEOs with the higher facial ratios actually achieved significantly greater firm financial performance than CEOs with the lower facial ratios," Wong says.

Don't run out and invest in wide-faced CEOs' companies, though. Wong and her colleagues also found that the way the top management team thinks, as reflected in their writings, can get in the way of this effect. Teams that take a simplistic view of the world, in which everything is black and white, are thought to be more deferential to authority; in these companies, the CEO's face shape is more important. It's less important in companies where the top managers see the world more in shades of gray.

Exactly what is the best way buy and sell in finance markets given ...

It was budget day earlier on in England and there were some tax increases for us all. This wasn't surprising given the state the existing finances of the United Kingdom are in. One of the taxes to go up was the capital gains tax.

This is something that may hit lots of traders hard. I am fortunate that I do financial spread betting as this implies that I don't have to stress about paying capital gains tax is it is presently exempt in Great Britain.

As the budget was being claimed the markets were declining. This is awful news for a lot of investors and they have an inclination to have a buy and hold technique leaving them with a ?long bias ? in the market. With financial spread betting you could?ve milked the declines by taking a short position.

In another financial market, currencies, there had been a different picture arising. While the stock market was falling the British pound was strengthening. With financial spread betting you can trade in different markets from the same account so you could switch your short position from the market to a long position in the pound in a couple of seconds.

It was obvious to me that I cannot depend on the state to support me in my old age. I need to do that myself. People know this but are put off from investing because they don't enough starting capital. This isn't a problem with financial spread betting as you do not pay commissions on your trade so there is not any advantage to trading large.

Before moving on I will say that there are risks concerned. You trade on a margin meaning leverage. This is beneficial when you win but you can lose everything if you don't control the risks.

Yesterday was an excellent example of how financial spread betting works for me. Think about all of the risks and rewards before you decide if it will work for you too.

Would you like to discover more info on financial spread betting? Should you then ensure you check out our website. I can demonstrate easy methods to reduce dangers and pick out from one of the many spread betting companies which you?ll find to choose from.

Kentchurch Court, Ancestral Home of the Scudamore Family

Kentchurch Court was formerly a 14th century castle, it is a handsome stately home. It is situated in Herefordshire in the United Kingdom. This famous house forms part of a vast five thousand acre estate surrounded by its ancient deer park, bordering both England and Wales.

Country Gardens Hereford

The property has been used as a film location on different occasions featuring in both ?The Vault of Horror? and ?On the Black Hill?. In 2003 the house was refurbished to be used for filming the Channel 4 reality programme ?Regency House Party?. 25 different rooms were redesigned and fitted in the diverse styles of the Regency period at an estimated cost of ?250,000 in exchange for the use of the house. The daunting job of packing up the house prior to0 refurbishment took ten weeks and a total of 3 miles of bubble wrap! More recently in 2011, Kentchurch Court featured in Channel 4?s ?Country House Rescue?.The house is the home of the Scudamore family and has been handed down through many generations of the family since 1058. The present house was renovated by John Nash in 1795 in the Gothic revival style, is now regarded as one of the most significantly important historic buildings in the UK and dates back to the 14th century.

Gardens Herefordshire

Owned and run by Jan Lucas-Scudamore and her family, Kentchurch Court is still a family home. Although it is still a family home and estate, Kentchurch Court and its marvellous Gardens are now available for visits members of the public on certain days through the year and the garden is a part of the National Garden Scheme. The deer park at Kentchurchwas formerlya medieval settlement presently contains approximately two hundred and fifty fallow deer. This spot was previously owned by the Knights Templar and was used as a Royal hunting ground. It was purchased by the Scudamore family approximately 500 years ago from the Knights Hospitallers of Dinmore. By making a prior arrangement it is possible to schedule a visit to the deer park and enjoy an organised walk through the many ancient Yew, Sweet Chestnut, Maple and Oak trees. In 1815, the twenty five acre gardens were landscaped in the popular picturesque style which was fashionable during that period. The picturesque style remains evident to this day and there are interesting collections of a number of flowering plants such as rhododendrons and geraniums, along with a fantastic range of mature trees. Lovely displays of wild woodland plants such as bluebells and snowdrops flower in early spring months.

Herefordshire Gardens

Wonderful borders in the walled area of the garden have a number of interesting collections of a variety of plant families. A vast and mature apple orchard wows visitors with its brilliant display of colour when its under planted flowers are in bloom. In the autumn season a display of rich colour is provided by the gardens wonderful maples.Throughout the year, the extensive vegetable garden at Kentchurch provides the house with wonderful seasonal produce. The vegetable garden offers yet another attractive spread of colour with its flowering climbers which are grown on many supporting frames within the area to pollinate the vegetables.

Graham Wilbert named starting quarterback at Florida Atlantic

by Tom D'Angelo

Redshirt junior Graham Wilbert was named the starting quarterback today by FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger, according to OwlAccess.com

Wilbert beat out classmate David Kooi, despite throwing three interceptions in Saturday?s scrimmage. He took snaps with the first team during Tuesday?s practice.

Wilbert moved ahead of Kooi in a battle to replace Jeff Van Camp during the spring and entered camp No. 1 on the depth chart despite breaking a finger during the spring game.

Wilbert and Kooi have both struggled during spring games but both were given opportunities to run the first team offense.

Wilbert, who will be making his first career start when the Owls open the season next Saturday at Florida, has completed just one of five passes for 41 yards in his career

Homeschooling Socialization Questions | Topics Info | Reference ...

Children who are home schooled may or may not be socialized in a beneficial way, depending on the whole picture. In order for kids to develop in this crucial area, parents must be alert and well informed on how to encourage their kids? progress. Parents who home school their kids have to give them every opportunity to develop socially, and not only intellectually.

Children inclined towards shyness may not make it easy for their parents, as they may appear to prefer staying inside with their books to interacting with others. If this continues, the child may never get used to being around other people and this could be harmful in the long run. Parents may have to intervene and make sure the child is socialized, even if he or she resists it. Socializing can never be ignored when it comes to a child?s education, and parents have to keep this in mind.

With some exceptions, public education today is in shambles and presents more threats and pitfalls than opportunities for children. Between violence and the overall lowering of standards in schools, there is little to recommend mainstream education today. Parents are more likely to ensure that their kids are properly educated, as well as socialized, than contemporary schools. When it comes to what they can see and experience, students in a traditional school are much more limited than those who are home schooled. it?s quite simple for parents to provide their kids with many valuable lessons in the form of trips, cultural events and hands on experiences.

There are often many support groups comprised of homeschool students. Some of these groups may also have an affiliation with a local church, as well. It does look like that the question of socialization is being addressed by providing adequate social outlets. One interesting fact is that many homeschoolers engage in more diverse groups. For instance, many students are willing to actively interact with other age groups. That is very rare in public schools. There is peer pressure to avoid interacting with younger ages and the schools don?t seem to encourage it either.

Going to the park or participating activities put on by the recreation department in your area is another way to introduce your children to others their age. Many of these organizations provide team sports as well as clubs similar to 4-H clubs. This can augment the other strategies you may be using for helping your child develop their social skills. This provides a great way for your children to meet others in their age range. And that is what it?s all about and solves the main criticism most people have for homeschooling.

This topic between socialization and homeschooling has been debated for a long time and will continue to be. There will always be relevant points on either side. Parents of children who are homeschooled need to ensure that they have access to healthy social outlets. That is probably not difficult to do unless the family is in a remote area.

5 Questions to Ask When Choosing You Sex Crime Lawyer - Law ...

Last updated 11 hours ago

A sex crime refers to any criminal act that involves the illegal or unlawful practice of a sexual act, including rape, sexual assault, incest, pedophilia, and child pornography. If you?ve been wrongfully accused of a sex crime, then hiring a sex crime attorney is essential. Before you schedule a consultation, consider these five questions to ask when choosing your sex crime lawyer.

  1. How Long Have They Been Practicing?
One of the first things to ask any potential criminal lawyer is how long they have been practicing in their field. This includes ensuring they are part of the American Bar Association, which guarantees their level of education, ongoing training, and commitment to legal representation.
    ?
  2. Are They Experienced With Sex Crime Cases?
Ask how many sex crime cases they handled, including the history of case outcomes.
    ?
  3. What Are The Possible Outcomes of the Case?
The last thing you want is to hire a lawyer who doesn?t have your best interests in mind. Be sure to discuss their legal strategy and plan of action so you have a better idea of the possible outcomes.
    ?
  4. What Are the Rates for Legal Counsel?
Another important question to ask any potential lawyer is what they charge for their services, including legal advice, filing fees, and court-related charges in the event your case goes to trial.
    ?
  5. Do They Recommend Mediation or Arbitration?
The last question you?ll want to ask your lawyer is whether they suggest mediation or arbitration. Mediation is when opposing parties use a neutral third party to resolve their disputes. Arbitration is an agreement between both parties to resolve the dispute without the help of the court system.
    ?

If you?ve been charged with a sex crime, then the experienced Pittsburgh criminal attorneys at the Law Offices of David S. Shrager will guide you through the legal process. For a full listing of practice areas or attorney profiles, contact our firm at (412) 567-5833.

Hospitals are giving faster heart care, study says

HOLD FOR RELEASE AT 4 P.M. EDT; graphic shows how an angioplasty procedure is performed

In this photo taken Aug. 19, 2011, Linda Tisch poses in her back yard at her home in Westerley, R.I. Tisch suffered a heart attack on Saturday Aug. 13, 2011, was treated in a record 16 minutes and is returning to work today just 10 days after treatment. (AP Photo/Stephan Savoia)

In a spectacular turnabout, hospitals are treating almost all major heart attack patients within the recommended 90 minutes of arrival, a new study finds. Just five years ago, less than half of them got their clogged arteries opened that fast.

The time it took to treat such patients plunged from a median of 96 minutes in 2005 to only 64 minutes last year, researchers found.

Some hospitals are moving at warp speed: Linda Tisch was treated in a mere 16 minutes after she was stricken while visiting relatives near Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut this month. Emergency responders called ahead to mobilize a team of heart specialists.

Once she arrived, "they had a brief conversation and I went straight into the OR. My family was absolutely flabbergasted," said Tisch, 58, who went home to Westerly, R.I., two days later.

Tisch wasn't a fluke. The hospital took 26 minutes on another case on Thursday.

"Americans who have heart attacks can now be confident that they're going to be treated rapidly in virtually every hospital of the country," said Yale cardiologist Dr. Harlan Krumholz. He led the study, published online Monday by an American Heart Association journal, Circulation.

What is remarkable about this improvement, Krumholz said, is that it occurred without money incentives or threat of punishment. Instead, the government and a host of private groups led research on how to shorten treatment times and started campaigns to persuade hospitals that this was the right thing to do.

"It's amazing and it's very gratifying. I'm surprised that we were able to achieve that type of dramatic improvement" so quickly, said Dr. John Brush, a cardiologist at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va., who helped the American College of Cardiology design its campaign, which involved more than 1,000 hospitals.

Heart attacks are caused by clogged arteries that prevent enough oxygen and blood from reaching the heart. Each year, about 250,000 people in the United States and more than 3 million worldwide suffer a major one, where a main artery is completely blocked.

The best remedy is angioplasty, in which doctors push a tube through an artery to the clog, inflate a tiny balloon to flatten it, and place a mesh prop called a stent to keep the artery open.

The period from hospital arrival to angioplasty is called "door-to-balloon" time, and guidelines say this should be 90 minutes or less. Any delay means more heart damage, and the risk of dying goes up 42 percent if care is delayed even half an hour.

Not all hospitals have the capability to do angioplasty around the clock, so part of the effort to speed care involved setting rules for who has to be consulted before deciding to do the procedure.

The study involved more than 300,000 patients who had an emergency angioplasty at hospitals that get Medicare reimbursements. The researchers looked at records from 2005, just before campaigns to shorten treatment times were launched, through September 2010.

Only 44 percent were treated in the recommended time in 2005, but by last year it was 91 percent.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services paid for the study.

"It's not an exaggeration to say that care of heart attacks in the United States has been transformed by this improvement," said Dr. Christopher Granger, a Duke University Medical Center cardiologist who led a Heart Association program to improve care.

"We've made very important progress but there still is a lot of unfinished work in improving heart attack care," such as what happens before people get to a hospital where angioplasty is done, he said.

Patients also need to do their part, by knowing the warning signs of a heart attack:

? Discomfort in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.

? Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.

? Shortness of breath, which might include breaking out in a cold sweat, or feelings of nausea or lightheadedness.

What to do is simple, doctors say: Call 911.

Facebook, Twitter Drew Record Numbers Of U.S. Visitors In July

facebookcomScore's July traffic numbers are out and similar to June's findings, Facebook and Twitter both saw record traffic in terms of U.S. unique visitors in the month. In July, Facebook saw a whopping 162 million unique visitors, compared to 160.8 million unique vistors in June, and 157.2 million uniques in May. Twitter also posted record traffic in its five year history; with 32.8 million unique U.S. visitors in July, up from 30.6 million unique visitors in June, and 27 million unique vistors in May. As we've noted in the past, the steady increase in traffic is a big deal for Twitter, which splits traffic between its own mobile clients and the many third-party clients that are used to access the network. And Twitter just completed the switch from the old web interface to its redesigned, feature-rich web app.

Russell Armstrong to Be Cremated

With Bravo still considering its options for The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and with a new rumor spreading that Russell Armstrong recently broke the cheekbones of his wife, at least one aspect of this tragedy has been settled:

The late reality star will be cremated and a funeral will be held for him in Los Angeles next week.

Taylor Armstrong and Family

There had reportedly been a conflict over where Russell's ashes would be spread - California or Texas - but because the couple was still married at the time of his suicide, Taylor is making the funeral arrangement.

UPDATE: There is still some controversy going on, and will now be a second service held for Russell in Texas. Ronald Richards, a lawyer for Russell, tells E! News:

"They [Taylor and her attorney] are playing fast and loose. They have kept the funeral location, service, and time secret from his mother, father, and sister.  His sister and father have told me that Taylor has not called them one time. The dispute is anyone coming to participate in the funeral in Los Angeles, not sending his remains to Texas."
