Gaddafi sons broadcast confusion as battle looms (Reuters)

TRIPOLI/TAWARGA, Libya (Reuters) ? Muammar Gaddafi's sons clashed on the airwaves Wednesday, with one offering peace and another promising a 'war of attrition' as a final battle for control of Libya's coast loomed.

The conflicting messages were the latest evidence that the fallen leader was losing his grip on what remains of his entourage after a six-month uprising left his 42-year rule of the North African nation in tatters.

NATO warplanes struck at loyalist troops dug in around his besieged hometown of Sirte -- his last stronghold along the heavily populated Mediterranean seaboard-- and refugees streamed out fearing a bloody showdown.

A week after they overran the capital, forcing Gaddafi into hiding, irregular troops of the new ruling council have paused in a drive to take Sirte and Gaddafi strongholds in the desert, giving Sirte's defenders until Saturday to surrender. But frontline clashes continued, as did NATO air strikes.

"We were talking about negotiations based on ending bloodshed," Gaddafi's son Saadi said on al-Arabiya television, saying he had been given his father's blessing to negotiate with the ruling National Transitional Council.

The head of Tripoli's military council, Abdul Hakim Belhadj, told Reuters he had spoken to Saadi by telephone and had promised him decent treatment if he surrenders.

"We want to spare bloodletting, therefore negotiation and surrender is preferable," Belhadj said. "If this does not happen there is no other way except a military solution."

In a sign of turbulence within the Gaddafi clan, the former leader's better-known son Saif al-Islam hurled defiance at the NATO-backed forces and said the fight would continue.

"We must wage a campaign of attrition day and night until these lands are cleansed from these gangs and traitors," he said in a statement broadcast on the Syrian-owned Arrai satellite TV channel. "We assure people that we are standing fast and the commander is in good condition."

He said there were 20,000 loyalist soldiers ready to defend Sirte in the case of an attack.

Despite shortages and disruptions, people in Tripoli, Misrata, Benghazi and other cities took to the streets to celebrate the Eid al-Fitr holiday, a high point of the Muslim calendar marking the end of the Ramadan fast. For most Libyans, it was the first Eid they could remember without Gaddafi.

Anxious to aid -- and steer -- the new rulers of the country, and to consolidate their own victory over a man who has baffled and infuriated them for decades, Western governments will hold a "Friends of Libya" meeting in Paris Thursday.

The date, September 1, is laden with symbolism as the anniversary of Gaddafi's seizure of power in 1969.

Until the 69-year-old fugitive is hunted down, dead or alive, the transitional council's leaders say they will not count their country's "liberation" as complete.

But though there is much talk of closing in on Gaddafi and his sons, of tempting loyalists to betray them and of tracking their communications, it is unclear where the key figures are.

VIOLENCE

Hisham Buhagiar, a senior NTC official who is coordinating the hunt, told Reuters he believed Gaddafi was either in the Bani Walid area, southeast of Tripoli, or in Sirte, 450 km (265 miles) east of the capital.

The arrest in Tripoli Wednesday of Gaddafi's foreign minister, Abdelati Obeidi, as witnessed by a Reuters journalist may provide more clues.

"We trace a lot of people who are not in the first inner circle with him, but the second or third circle. We're talking to them," said Buhagiar. "They want to strike deals. Everyone who helps us is on the white list."

Britain's ITV News reported that British special forces were helping in the hunt for Gaddafi. They believed he is still in Libya and has been denied entry to Algeria, where his wife and three of his children have taken refuge.

Troopers of the elite SAS, some working from ships off the coast, were using round-the-clock aerial surveillance to try to track him and his close supporters.

"When a target is identified, a Helicopter Assault Force moves in to capture the individual who will then be interrogated for further intelligence about Colonel Gaddafi's movements, the ITV report said.

While the threat of an Iraq-style insurgency led by those loyal to the old guard is clearly a worry to the new leaders, their international backers are also concerned that the NTC can overcome regional, ethnic and tribal differences across Libya.

There has been praise from abroad for its pledges of equality, fairness and willingness to bury past grievances, though there is also disquiet at evidence of harassment, and worse, by victorious fighters of some groups, notably black Libyans and African migrants, widely seen as allies of Gaddafi.

At Tawarga, where anti-Gaddafi forces are dug in and readying an assault on Sirte to the east, most of the residents were black African rather than Arab in origin and have recently fled -- apparently in fear of reprisals by fighters from the city of Misrata who see Tawarga as a pro-Gaddafi town.

Also fleeing their homes were hundreds of people from towns around Sirte, who streamed through a frontline checkpoint set up by NTC forces on the coastal highway at Tawarga.

"I need to take my family where it is peaceful," said one man named Mohammed, as laden vehicles flying white flags were checked for weapons. "Here there will be a big fight."

Ali Faraj, a fighter, said he doubted people in Sirte would willingly join the revolt: "There will be a big fight for Sirte. It's a dangerous city. It's unlikely to rise up," he said.

"A lot of people there support Gaddafi. It's too close to Gaddafi and his family. It is still controlled by them."

There is no independent confirmation of conditions in Sirte, which was developed into a prosperous city of 100,000 during the 42 years Gaddafi ruled Libya. NTC officials say power and water are largely cut off and supplies are low.

CELEBRATION

In Tripoli after dawn, worshippers packed Martyrs' Square, which was named Green Square in the Gaddafi era, chanting "Allahu Akbar (God is greatest), Libya is free."

Fighters on rooftops guarded against any attack by loyalists and sniffer dogs checked cars. Even the interim interior minister, Ahmed Darat, was searched.

"This is the most beautiful Eid and most beautiful day in 42 years," said Hatem Gureish, 31, a merchant from Tripoli.

Fatima Mustafa, 28, a pregnant woman wearing a black chador, said: "This is a day of freedom. I'm glad I haven't given birth yet so my daughter can be born into a free Libya."

Libyans who revolted against Gaddafi in February needed NATO air power to help them win, but, given their country's unhappy colonial history, they remain wary of foreign meddling.

Their interim leaders, trying to heal a nation scarred by Gaddafi's cruelly eccentric ways, may want United Nations help in setting up a new police force, but see no role for international peacekeepers or observers, a U.N. official said.

The NTC, keen to assert its grip and relieve hardship after six months of war, won a $1.55 billion cash injection when Britain's air force flew in new dinar banknotes to Benghazi. They had been printed in Britain but then held there by U.N. sanctions imposed on Gaddafi's government.

France, which with Britain took a lead role in backing the revolt and will host Thursday's conference, has asked the committee to unfreeze some $2 billion of Libyan assets in France, a French government source said.

Pirate Bay founders launch BayFiles: a copyright-friendly file-hosting ...

BayFilesFounders of popular file-sharing website The Pirate Bay are launching a new file-hosting service called BayFiles, reports TorrentFreak.

Much like file-sharing services RapidShare and Megaupload, BayFiles works lets users upload files to its servers and easily share them online. That?s different from The Pirate Bay, which currently hosts torrent files (essentially pointers to files you can download from the peer-to-peer BitTorrent network).

And unlike The Pirate Bay, BayFiles will be dedicated to respecting copyrights ? That?s right, the creators best identified with online piracy want to launch a legal business.

According to the report, the founders said Bayfiles?s ultimate goal is to make sharing both effortless and efficient while maintaining privacy. The company also said it plans to expand Bayfiles into a more feature-rich cloud hosting service like Dropbox.

The Hong Kong-based company said BayFiles has officially registered as a DMCA agent. To further underline its commitment, the company even states in its official terms of service that any content that ?violates third-party copyrights? is not permitted to be uploaded. Those that frequently violate those terms will have their accounts disabled ?regardless of proof of infringement.?

By adopting a similar stance that competitor RapidShare, which won a crucial court case proving its innocence in May 2010, uses to combat the actions of its users, BayFiles can maintain its status as a legal operation as long as it never promotes copyright infringement.

Given The Pirate Bay?s history with both record labels and movie studious, it?s likely that major content producers will be looking for any excuse to file a lawsuit against BayFiles. But that?s not the only battle the company will have to overcome.

The cloud storage market is just recently starting to heat up, with major players like Apple, Google and Amazon offering their own file storage services.

The service is free and offers incentives for people to signup. Unregistered users can share files up to 250MB, while regular members have a limit of 500MB. BayFiles offers a premium subscription service that allows users to upload files as large as 5GB and gives them unlimited storage. Premium members can chose to pay either accounts do come at a price, ?5 euros (about $7) per month or ?45 ($63) annually, which is comparable to Apple?s iCloud offerings.

Travelers wait for flights to resume after Irene

Many travelers heading to and from the East Coast still face days of delays even as airlines start flying again Monday at major airports that closed for Tropical Storm Irene.

Ground transportation ? including New York City's subways ? also started easing back into service Sunday evening, though disruptions remained widespread.

More than 11,000 flights were canceled nationwide over the weekend, and hundreds more will be scrubbed Monday morning, a flight-tracking service said.

There's no easy way to squeeze all those displaced passengers onto scheduled flights, especially if airports around New York ? the nation's busiest airspace ? encounter delays reopening Monday. And ground transport alternatives remain limited, with bus and train service disrupted into Monday as well along the East Coast.

Airlines won't say how many passengers have been grounded since Irene came ashore in North Carolina on Saturday.

FlightAware, which tracks cancelations, put the total around 650,000, noting that many of the 11,800-plus flights canceled so far were on regional airlines that use small planes. Some travel experts suggested much larger numbers ? 1 million or more.

Finding open seats will be especially difficult this week because it's the last gasp of the summer vacation season.

"We're coming into the Labor Day holiday weekend, so a lot of those flights are already full," said Todd Lehmacher, a spokesman for US Airways.

Airlines resumed flights Sunday at airports around Washington, Philadelphia and Richmond, Va. But the longer closure of the New York area's Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark, N.J., airports means travel delays will continue rippling across the country.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the three airports, said late Sunday that Kennedy and Newark would open to arriving flights at 6 a.m. Monday, with departures beginning at noon. LaGuardia was to reopen at 7 a.m.

New York City officials said they weren't sure Sunday evening when mass transit would be fully restored after shutting down Saturday. Some local bus service resumed Sunday, and the subways will resume some service Monday, though officials said commuters should expect long lines and long waits. Downed trees and high water still covered commuter train tracks across the region, according to a temporary transit information website offering periodic updates, www.mta.info.

Airline officials said those disruptions would affect their ability to get back into gear.

"It's really dependent upon mass transit and the airport being ready to support the start-up," JetBlue CEO Dave Barger told NBC.

Long-distance bus and train companies also saw lingering effects from Irene, which was downgraded early Sunday from a hurricane to a tropical storm as high winds ebbed.

Greyhound scrubbed bus travel between Richmond, Va., and Boston all weekend. A spokeswoman said buses would begin to roll north out of Richmond Monday morning and the company hoped to be running in New York by midday.

Amtrak said trains from New York to Florida will be canceled Monday, as will the car train between Lorton, Va., and Sanford, Fla. Some lines in North Carolina and Florida will be open.

Amtrak said in a statement Sunday evening that many routes south of Philadelphia will resume operation, while it canceled many trains between New York and points north. The railroad said separately that its inspections are revealing problems with wiring and signals, as well as trees blocking the tracks. Passengers with paid tickets on canceled trains can rebook or receive refunds by calling 800-872-7245 or visiting Amtrak.com.

But United, Continental, Delta, American, JetBlue, Southwest, AirTran and US Airways canceled hundreds of Monday-morning flights to the New York and Boston area.

Airlines said passengers should call ahead and make sure they have a confirmed seat before going to the airport, but the 670 flights that FlightAware said airlines had canceled for Monday is a small share of the nation's daily flights.

Airlines also moved several hundred planes out of the storm's path to avoid damage, which will further slow the return to normal service.

When blizzards hit the East Coast in December and February, it took some passengers days to get home. That could happen again.

Sara Hesselsweet of Norwalk, Conn., and her family were to fly home Sunday from vacation at Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada border. After their flight was canceled, American Airlines told her it couldn't find seats for her, her husband and 2-year-old son until next Saturday.

So the family decided to fly from Reno, Nev., to Dallas and on to Chicago, where they would rent a car to drive back to Connecticut.

"We checked Philadelphia, D.C., Boston, the Carolinas ? we couldn't get a flight anywhere," said Hesselsweet, sitting amid a pile of carry-on bags in the Reno airport.

What's the best kind of countertops for DIY? - Home Improvement On ...

Posted by admin | DIY Home Improvement | Posted on August 27th, 2011

My kitchen is pretty small. I have forest green laminate now that I really don?t care for but they are in good shape. I?m looking to replace it inexpensively. I figure my best bet is to do laminate again. The cabinets are white and floors are wood.

Also, should I buy from large home improvement store or find a mom and pop? or shop online?
Thank you all for your help. I contacted the company that does the granite overlay product (which isn?t granite at all) and the price blew me away. And not in a good way. It was over 2 thousand dollars. I can live with the green for now if I have to. If I can do new laminate for just a few hundred dollars then I will probably go with that.

Chosen Answer:

Well,I just redid my laminate counter top in the kitchen.I had VERY little money and I discovered a new laminate paint at Home Depot. They have many shades and they are pretty easy and I have found them very durable.I cook lot and so far so good. I did put an extra coat on them and let them dry well. My color of choice was gray because I wanted the look o f concrete. But as I say they have many colors to choose from. I don?t know about trying to lay down a new laminate by yourself.,I just know the ?glue? is very fast and once the laminate touches it you cant move it around if you don?t lay it straight the first time.Good luck whatever you choose.

Rare immune cell is asset and liability in fighting infection

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2011) ? The same trait that makes a rare immune cell invaluable in fighting some infections also can be exploited by other diseases to cause harm, two new studies show.

In papers published online in Immunity, scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis reveal that the cells, known as CD8 alpha+ dendritic cells (CD8a+ DCs), can help the body beat back infection by a common parasite, but the same cells can be hijacked by a bacterium to decimate the body's defenses.

The trait that makes the cells both an asset and a liability is the way they alert other immune cells, causing them to attack invaders. CD8a+ DCs can sound the alarm in a manner that is particularly helpful for stripping away invaders' disguises. But this process takes time, and Listeria bacteria can take advantage of that delay to wreak havoc inside the spleen.

"As we've discovered how useful these cells can be in fighting different kinds of infections, researchers have wondered why they're so rare," says Kenneth Murphy, MD, PhD, the Eugene L. Opie First Centennial Professor of Pathology and Immunology. "This may be why -- overcommitting to any one defensive strategy opens up opportunities for counterstrategies that exploit it."

CD8a+ DCs make up about 10 percent of all dendritic cells in the body. By studying the basic functions of these cells, scientists are laying the groundwork to use them to fight infections. The cells also appear to be essential for some cancer vaccines, which enlist the power of the immune system to help fight tumors.

Murphy, who is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, previously created genetically altered mice where CD8a+ DCs could be selectively eliminated. By comparing these mice with normal mice, Murphy and his collaborators have shown that CD8a+ DCs are essential to priming the body's defenses against viral infections.

Viruses often try to disguise themselves to evade defenders, but CD8a+ DCs can extract characteristic parts of a virus and display them on their surface. Other cells also can make these displays, but CD8a+ DCs do it in a way that helps peel back disguises, causing other immune cells to seek out additional copies of the virus and kill them.

In one of the new studies, doctoral student Mona Mashayekhi showed that CD8a+ DCs are early responders to infection with the Toxoplasma gondii parasite, which causes serious disease in patients with weakened or suppressed immune systems. She found only CD8a+ DCs produce a signal that causes other immune cells to fight the parasite.

In the second paper, Brian Edelson, MD, PhD, assistant professor of pathology and immunology, tested the cells against the bacteria Listeria, which can cause food poisoning. He discovered that CD8a+ DCs could make Listeria infection worse.

"Listeria likes to get into immune cells using a pathway that typically leads to the bacteria's death in garbage disposals inside the cell," Murphy explains. "But that pathway is slowed down in CD8a+ DCs to ensure that they can retain part of the invader to display to other immune cells."

Researchers watched Listeria use this delay to ride inside CD8a+ DCs as they entered the spleen, where immune cells not yet activated for attacking invaders are kept. These cells are easy targets for the bacteria, and infection worsens.

According to Murphy, CD8a+ DCs' specialized ability to initiate immune attacks makes them essential for efforts to create cancer vaccines based on DNA from tumors. He and collaborator William Gillanders, MD, professor of surgery, are working to use these vaccines to make immune cells attack cancers.

"What we're learning from basic studies, for example, has already enabled us to increase the number of CD8a+ DCs in mice until they're about 30 to 40 percent of dendritic cells," Murphy says. "Learning more about how this cell interacts with other immune cells will allow us to create effective cancer vaccines."
