Effort to rebuild CBS News focuses on morning (AP)

NEW YORK ? David Rhodes plucks a cassette tape from a cart in the CBS newsroom. It's an "On the Road" segment by Charles Kuralt that aired in 1971.

A classic, no doubt, and one that CBS News has stored digitally. So what is it doing there? What possible purpose does a 40-year-old tape serve in a newsroom undergoing renovation in 2011?

Rhodes, a half-year into his new job as CBS News president, shakes his head. It's one of the small things he encounters in his effort to turn around a news division steeped in tradition (a gold plaque on the door to "CBS Evening News" producer Patricia Shevlin's office a few steps away identifies it as Edward R. Murrow's old office) yet has fallen into disrepair.

After a reboot of the evening newscast under Scott Pelley, Rhodes and his boss, CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager, are devoting much of their attention to the network's cellar-dwelling morning show.

"We do think what we're cooking up is remarkable," said Rhodes, 37, who worked at Fox News Channel and Bloomberg before coming to CBS News.

That's a tease, since only outlines of what they're working on are known. PBS interviewer Charlie Rose told Newsweek that he's talked to CBS about hosting the show, although no decisions have been made. CBS News hired Chris Licht, former executive producer of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," and he sits next to Rhodes at a horseshoe-shaped desk in the middle of the CBS newsroom. Veteran newsman John Miller was just hired as a correspondent. The future of the current on-air team of Chris Wragge, Erica Hill and Jeff Glor is murky. National weather forecasts, and forecaster Marysol Castro, were cast aside for local reports.

The timing of a full-fledged relaunch is unclear, partly dependent on the physical renovation and construction of a new studio.

"We're building a facility and office that will be the envy of the industry," Licht said. "Imagine how important that is to a staff that is working in what can only be described as the scent of Barney Miller."

Licht's hiring led many in the industry to assume CBS wanted to create its version of "Morning Joe," perhaps even the real thing if Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski became available. Rhodes said it was less what Licht did at MSNBC that was as important as the fact that "it was different and it was successful. That's what we want."

The show's tenor is already clear. Much like the evening news, "The Early Show" has become a more serious newscast, upping the percentage of overseas and political news while leaving the makeup hints and rock concerts behind. Rhodes recalled seeing a karaoke contest on "The Early Show" shortly after he started at CBS. He wondered, "Tell me how this is news, exactly?"

On the wall of his office, Rhodes has a chart that tracks viewership of NBC's "Today" show, ABC's "Good Morning America" and CBS' show. The first two are almost mirror images: when one goes up a little, the other goes down. CBS, well behind, seems immune to the others' fluctuations.

He doesn't see the point in trying to copy them.

"CBS has finally come to understand what people have been saying for years: You'll never beat the `Today' show by trying to be the `Today' show," said Beth Knobel, a Fordham University journalism professor who worked at CBS News from 1997 to 2006.

The show now is "more reflective of CBS News values," Rhodes said. "A lot of people might say, `It's not going to work, a harder news approach.' But we think there are a lot of people who are encouraged by that, want something like that and can't find it anyplace else."

Logic would seem to dictate doing something different than two more successful competitors. But even in third place, "The Early Show" has been profitable for CBS. Change puts that at risk.

After only a few weeks on the job, Rhodes wrote a tough memo to producers of "The Early Show," angry that one morning's program had done nothing to follow up on a newsworthy report made on "60 Minutes" the previous night. The oversight had hit on two pet peeves: not being aggressive in reporting and not having CBS newscasts work together to advance one another's good stories.

The memo became public. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing, since it delivered the message that there's a new sheriff in town.

That doesn't make Rhodes the bad cop to Fager's good one. Fager is a CBS News lifer who knows every corner of the building and everyone in it. He's eager to set a direction for the news division but didn't want to leave his job producing "60 Minutes." Rhodes, who brings another perspective after working at different news divisions, said the day-to-day management is what he signed on for.

CBS News has strengths beyond "60 Minutes." "Sunday Morning" is doing well in the ratings and "Face the Nation" with Bob Schieffer is up in the ratings this fall while its NBC and ABC rivals are down.

The evening and morning shows have been down so long it's possible they are locked into permanent third place positions. What's important to the new leaders is that CBS News has a clear identity that reflects its history. If you're the type of person who thinks too much fluff has seeped into network news, then CBS is your place.

There's a long-gone swagger that has returned in recent months, epitomized by a promotional ad that touts CBS' reporting and emphasis on substance. "Hey, it's not like we invented original reporting on television," the narrator says.

"Oh, wait," he says, as the "60 Minutes" stopwatch ticks behind him. "Yes, we did."

Knobel notices an improved morale when she sees some of her former colleagues.

"People are really happy that serious news guys are in charge at CBS," she said. "They really understand the zeitgeist of CBS, what makes CBS News tick. And it's not soft news."

When Pelley replaced Katie Couric as the division's top anchor this spring and moved across West 57th Street from the "60 Minutes" office (even though he's continuing to do his full slate of stories at the newsmagazine), he immediately turned off the row of TV sets that displayed for the newsroom what the network's competitors were doing.

There was no mistaking the intent: CBS News is going its own way.

Man at center of Ga. megachurch probe speaks out (AP)

ATLANTA ? A North Carolina businessman involved in an investment program at an Atlanta-area megachurch where former members claim they lost their retirement savings says he's taking action to "make things right."

A group of church members is suing New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and its pastor, Bishop Eddie Long, saying they conspired with businessman Ephren Taylor Jr. to defraud the members through "wealth-building" seminars and sermons in 2009.

"In my case and that of my former company, some of the negative effects of a situation with very complex economics impacted businesses, individuals and families despite our best intentions," Taylor said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Attorneys for the church members say in a DeKalb County lawsuit that Taylor urged them to liquidate their retirement accounts, and as a result some lost their life savings.

The U.S. Secret Service and the Internal Revenue Service are also investigating issues surrounding the seminars, which were hosted at the Lithonia-based church which claims 25,000 members, federal officials said.

"Don't assume that I am just another greedy businessman," Taylor said in the statement. "I am taking action to make things right."

Taylor is also named as a defendant in a federal lawsuit filed this month in U.S. District Court in North Carolina.

In that case, lawyers say Taylor made a series of investment presentations for the "Prosperity Fund" at churches in Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

In the summer of 2008, he spoke at the Democratic National Convention to a youth leaders' summit on his "socially conscious" corporate investment strategy, according to the federal lawsuit.

"Taylor was fortunate to be riding the wave of popularity of young, black, successful men created by then U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama," the lawsuit states.

New Birth spokesman Art Franklin previously declined to comment on the church's role in the investments.

PFT: Cowher, Gruden linked to Dolphins job

125x125ad

On November 1, 2001, I busted a bottle of Boone?s Farm against my Commodore 64, and Profootballtalk.com was born.

There was no mission statement, no business plan, no bucket list.? I had done nine months of unpaid freelance work for the long-defunct NFLtalk.com, which was purchased along with the other Sportstalk.com sites in early 2001 after the tech bubble burst.? I then spent six months working from home for ESPN.com?s subscription-based Insider service, while also practicing law full time.

In October 2001, I was offered a one-year deal with ESPN.com, effective November 1.? (I still have the contract.)? I decided, for a variety of reasons that I won?t bore you with now (but might bore you with later), to launch an independent site (the word blog hadn?t been coined yet, and I have always despised it) that covered the NFL a bit more loosely, with entertainment being as important as information.

PFT launched November 1 of that year, we generated little or no revenue for at least three years, and then the snowball started to roll down the hill, a bit.? The watershed moment came in early 2006, when Ted Moon of Sprint reached out with a desire to explore an advertising relationship.? One thing led to another, we struck a deal, real money was flowing, and I knew at that point that, eventually, I wouldn?t be practicing law at all.

On July 1, 2009, it finally happened, and the two-plus years since then have been an exciting, fulfilling, challenging, and almost entirely enjoyable blur.

I?m not sure what we?ll do to commemorate the 10-year anniversary.? It would be nice if all of PFT Planet shows up next Tuesday and check in, if only to see if the hamsters powering the NBC servers will explode.? Maybe we?ll do something special for PFT Live.? Beyond that, I?m not looking for the day to be ensconced in self-congratulation.? It?s more about reflection and gratitude ? primarily to each of you ? and given the content of this post, the reflection already has started.

Actually, the reflection happens pretty much continuously.? I don?t know how or why this thing has grown, I don?t know how or why 90 percent of the people connected to the NFL read the site (the other 10 percent are lying), and I don?t know where this thing is going and how it will get there.? I?ve been enjoying the ride since Day One, and I?ll keep doing it as long as I can say that.

Hopefully, you?ve enjoyed it, too.? Hopefully, you?ll continue to do that.

If you have any suggestions on how we best should celebrate an unlikely 10-year anniversary, feel free to add them to the comments.? And be sure to check back next Tuesday to see what we do.? And every day between now and then.? And every day after that.? Until I either drop dead or decide to move on, or move out.

Herman Cain?s other tax plan has credibility

Herman Cain does not believe that his 9-9-9 Plan is the best long-term choice for the U.S. Tax Code. Surprised? It?s right there on his website. The pizza magnate and Republican Presidential candidate sees his triple-9 proposal as an interim fix and advocates another tax plan entirely for the long run. Vows Cain at hermancain.com: ?Amidst a backdrop of the economic renewal created by the 9-9-9 Plan, I will begin the process of educating the American people on the benefits of continuing the next step to the Fair Tax.?

If the ?Fair Tax? is what Cain really wants, then his supporters and critics should probably be focusing more on it and less on 9-9-9. Formally known as the FairTax (one word), it isn?t perfect, but it?s conceptually sounder than 9-9-9. And it belongs to a class of tax reforms that might do more to achieve what Cain says he wants, which is simplicity, fairness and the potential for boosting economic growth. (Texas Governor Rick Perry tried to one-up Cain on Oct. 19 by promising he would soon announce a flat tax ?so simple that even Timothy Geithner can file his taxes on time.?)

The FairTax that?s Cain?s ultimate goal is the creation of Leo E. Linbeck Jr., a wealthy, 77-year-old Houston builder who devised it with some friends in 1996 after commissioning research by economists and consulting focus groups. It?s a straightforward tax on consumption that spares savings, a concept that appeals to economists of various political stripes. It would be imposed as a 30 percent federal retail sales tax that replaces the personal and corporate income taxes as well as the gift, estate, capital gains and payroll taxes. Republicans in Congress have introduced FairTax bills repeatedly without it breaking through; the latest has 66 co-sponsors in the House (including one Democrat) and eight co-sponsors in the Senate.

Bloomberg Businessweek: What 9-9-9 means for rich and poor

Cain not only supports the FairTax; he served as a volunteer national spokesman for several years in the 2000s. Linbeck says he hasn?t discussed the 9-9-9 Plan with Cain, whom he calls a good friend, ?except to the extent that he sees 9-9-9 as a segue into the FairTax. We didn?t talk about the details. I didn?t see any reason to, frankly.?

The two plans would achieve different results. The 9-9-9 proposal would raise the tax burden on the lowest-earning workers while cutting the burden on the highest earners. Bruce Bartlett, a former Reagan Administration official, calls it a ?distributional monstrosity.? (There is an exception at the top: The idle rich, who live off their wealth, would suffer from the consumption tax without benefiting from the lower tax on wages.) The FairTax would be lighter on the poor, though how much lighter is a matter of dispute.

Cain portrays the 9-9-9 Plan as a 9 percent individual income tax, a 9 percent business tax, and a 9 percent sales tax. But how taxes are labeled doesn?t necessarily match who effectively pays them. Daniel N. Shaviro, a professor of tax law at New York University School of Law, says businesses would pay the tax levied on them by reducing workers? pay, while the sales tax would cut into the spending power of wages. The upshot, says Shaviro, is that 9-9-9 boils down to a 27 percent tax on workers? wages. Few economists have endorsed 9-9-9 aside from former Reagan aide and supply-sider Arthur Laffer.

Bloomberg Businessweek: Herman Cain: Mine. Mine. Mine

The FairTax has garnered support in conservative economic circles from the likes of Nobel laureate Vernon L. Smith and former Federal Reserve Governor Wayne Angell. But even there, economists ? a schismatic bunch ? see room for improvement. Laurence J. Kotlikoff, a Boston University economist who is a columnist for Bloomberg View and previously endorsed the FairTax, now proposes what he calls the Purple Tax (a blend of red and blue), a consumption levy that he says cleans up some problems with the FairTax. It taxes the benefits that homeowners get from living in their own homes. That catches people who would shelter income by buying big houses. It also attempts to tax Americans? consumption abroad. And it would tax inheritances and feature a payroll tax that, in a nod to liberals, exempts the first $40,000 of income and has no ceiling.

Tax evasion is a potential drawback of both the FairTax and Kotlikoff?s Purple Tax. The rates would be so high that people would have a strong incentive to dodge the levies. One option is to impose them as value-added taxes, as more than 100 other countries do. The VAT is collected incrementally at each stage of production, creating a paper trail and shrinking the sales tax imposed at the cash register. But both Linbeck and Kotlikoff argue that?s not necessary.

The usual rap on consumption taxes is that they are bound to fall more heavily on poor people than the current tax code does. But that flaw can be corrected by paying people a lump sum to lighten the burden. Linbeck?s group, Americans for Fair Taxation, calls it a ?prebate,? while Kotlikoff calls it a ?demogrant.? Cain?s 9-9-9 Plan doesn?t appear to offer a lump sum, which helps account for its regressivity.

Bloomberg Businessweek: Rick Perry needs a miracle

Why doesn?t Cain go straight to the FairTax, if he thinks it?s a better solution? Richard Lowrie, Cain?s adviser on economic issues, responds in an e-mail saying, ?The country is tired of economists passing up something great, while they hold out for their own view of perfect, and in doing so, sentence the country to more of the same.? The tax plan that sounds like a pizza price is, evidently, not going away.

The bottom line: Cain?s 9-9-9 Plan amounts to a 27 percent tax on wages. It isn?t taken as seriously by economists as his less-publicized FairTax.

Thailand's NBTC donates Amateur Radio repeater for flood ...

The Bangkok Post reports that Thailand's NBTC has donated an amateur radio repeater for use in flood relief communications.

They say:
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) met for the first time today [Monday], and first on the agenda was how to help with flood crisis relief.

Speaking before the first meeting of the commission since the royal command was issued endorsing?the appointment of its 11 members, NBTC chairman Gen Thares Punsri said it was urgent that telecommunications be improved in flood-hit areas.

He said the NBTC today gave a repeater to the Amateur Radio Operators Group of Ayutthaya to help strengthen its radio signal to cover a wider area.

Deputy chairman Col Sethapong Malisuwan said the commission would help strengthen amateur radio networks and assign community radio stations to keep the people informed of the flood situation.

Amateur radio operators can be of much help when the country is in crisis, he said.

Healthy Diet May Counteract Heart ... - Health Nutrition and Fitness

TUESDAY, Oct. 11 (HealthDay News) ? A healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables can significantly weaken the effect of a gene associated with an increased risk of heart disease, a new study suggests.

In the study, published in the current online edition of the journal PLoS Medicine, researchers examined the link between the 9p21 gene variant and diet in more than 27,000 people of five ethnicities ? Arab, European, Chinese, Latin American and South Asian.

The findings showed that the risk of heart attack in people with the 9p21 gene variant who ate a healthy diet composed mainly of raw vegetables, fruits and berries was similar to that of people without the high-risk gene variant.

The international study was led by researchers at McMaster and McGill universities in Canada.

?We observed that the effect of a high-risk genotype can be mitigated by consuming a diet high in fruits and vegetables,? joint principal investigator Sonia Anand, a researcher at the Population Health Research Institute and a professor of medicine and epidemiology at McMaster?s School of Medicine, said in a McMaster University news release. ?Our results support the public health recommendation to consume more than five servings of fruits or vegetables as a way to promote good health.?

?Our research suggests there may be an important interplay between genes and diet in cardiovascular disease,? added lead author Ron Do, who is now at the Center for Human Genetics Research at Massachusetts General Hospital but conducted the research as part of his doctoral program at McGill. ?Future research is necessary to understand the mechanism of this interaction, which will shed light on the underlying metabolic processes that the 9p21 gene is involved in.?
