Cain and Romney statistically tied in new Des Moines Register Iowa poll (The Ticket)

(Chris Carlson/AP)

Herman Cain and Mitt Romney are statistically tied for the lead in Iowa's Republican presidential primary race, according to a new Des Moines Register poll of likely caucus-goers in the state.

The Register survey, long considered the most reliable of Iowa polls, finds the former Godfather's Pizza executive with 1-point advantage in the state, leading the former Massachusetts governor 23 percent to 22 percent.

Ron Paul trailed in third place, with 12 percent support. The remaining 2012 hopefuls were in single digits, including Michele Bachmann (8 percent); Rick Perry (7 percent); Newt Gingrich (7 percent); Rick Santorum (5 percent) and Jon Huntsman (1 percent).

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percent.

Cain's popularity has soured in the state, in spite of the fact he's done little actual campaigning there. But Romney's numbers are equally surprising, given the ex-governor has visited the state just three times since launching his second White House bid this spring.

Merck 3Q profit soars, beats analysts' views (AP)

Drugmaker Merck & Co. said Friday that its third-quarter profit soared from results a year ago that were weighed down by huge acquisition and legal charges.

The latest results beat Wall Street estimates, and Merck shares rose 84 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $35.15 in morning trading.

"Three consecutive quarters of top and bottom line growth demonstrate out ability to consistently perform while at the same time making the strategic investments necessary for the future," CEO Kenneth Frazier said in a statement.

The maker of diabetes drug Januvia and Singulair for asthma and allergies said net income climbed to $1.69 billion, or 55 cents per share, the July-September period. That's up from $342 million, or 11 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding acquisition and restructuring charges in the latest quarter, adjusted income 94 cents per share. The charges were mostly related to its November 2009 purchase of fellow drugmaker Schering-Plough Corp. for $49 billion.

The adjusted earnings were 3 cents per share higher than the 91 cents per share expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet. The analysts typically exclude one-time items from their estimates.

Revenue rose 8 percent to $12.02 billion from $11.12 billion. The analysts expected revenue of $11.62 billion. Merck said revenue was boosted about 5 percent by favorable currency exchange rates.

The company raised the lower end of its 2011 forecast, to a new range of $3.72 to $3.76 per share, or $2.03 to $2.20 per share excluding one-time items. Analysts expect $3.73 per share for the year.

Prescription drug sales totaled $10.35 billion, led by strong sales of Singulair, Januvia and combination diabetes drug Janumet, the HIV drug Isentress and the Gardasil and Zostavax vaccines.

Singulair, Merck's top drug, saw sales rise 10 percent to $1.34 billion. Its U.S. patent expires next August, when generic competition will quickly reduce sales ? the key reason for Merck's latest round of job cuts.

Januvia and Janumet sales both jumped more than 40 percent, to $846 million and $350 million, respectively. They have quickly risen to be among the most popular and fastest-growing diabetes pills.

Sales of biologic immune disorder drug Remicade fell 15 percent to $561 million, because of revised terms of Merck's revenue-sharing deal on the drug with Johnson & Johnson. The new terms took effect in the third quarter, following settlement of a dispute in arbitration.

Sales of animal health products jumped 20 percent to $826 million. Consumer health sales edged up 3 percent to $421 million.

Poorer countries, those spending less on health care have more strokes, deaths

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2011) ? Poorer countries and those that spend proportionately less money on health care have more stroke and stroke deaths than wealthier nations and those that allocate more to health care, according to new research in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.

Poorer countries also had a greater incidence of hemorrhagic stroke -- caused by a burst blood vessel bleeding in or near the brain -- and had more frequent onset at younger ages.

Regardless of overall wealth, countries that spend less money proportionately on health care also had higher incidences of all four outcomes.

"Not only is the economic wellness of a country important, but also significant is what proportion of their gross domestic product is expended on health," said Luciano A. Sposato, M.D., M.B.A., study lead author and director of the neurology department at the Vascular Research Institute at INECO Foundation in Buenos Aires, Argentina. "This is very important for developing healthcare strategies to prevent stroke and other cardiovascular diseases."

In the large-scale literature review, researchers took a unique approach to identify stroke risk by correlating it to nationwide socioeconomic status.

Previous research tended to focus on the link between stroke and individual or family financial standing, said Sposato, also director of the Stroke Center at the Institute of Neurosciences, University Hospital Favaloro Foundation.

The study linked lower gross domestic product to:

  • 32 percent higher risk of strokes;
  • 43 percent increase of post-stroke deaths at 30 days;
  • 43 percent increase in hemorrhagic stroke; and
  • 47 percent higher incidence of younger-age-onset stroke.

Similarly, a lower percentage of health spending correlated to a comparable increase in the 30-day death rate and:

  • 26 percent higher risk of strokes;
  • 45 percent increase of post-stroke deaths at 30 days;
  • 32 percent increase in hemorrhagic stroke;
  • 36 percent higher incidence of younger-age-onset stroke.

Investigators analyzed 30 population-based studies conducted between 1998 and 2008 in 22 countries. They used statistical methods to link stroke risk, 30-day death rate, hemorrhagic stroke incidence and age at disease onset to three internationally accepted economic indicators. The indicators included gross domestic product, health expenditure per capita and unemployment rate. Unlike the other two indicators, unemployment rate didn't affect stroke or other outcomes.

"It is important to further discuss the health priorities for different countries," said Gustavo Saposnik, M.D., M.Sc., study co-author and director of stroke outcomes research at St. Michael's Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada. "This will provide the necessary background to help countries make the changes in how different resources and money are allocated."

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and a major cause of long-term disability. Worldwide, stroke is the second leading killer.

Dr. Sposato's participation was funded in part by the INECO Foundation.

Culture of Shock (preview)

Image: Steve McAlister/Getty Images (hand turning switch); Scientific American Mind (bolts)

In Brief

  1. Fifty years ago Stanley Milgram conducted groundbreaking experiments, discovering that ordinary people were willing to inflict lethal? shocks on a stranger when asked to do so by an experimenter.
  2. Initially seen as evidence of humans? blind obedience to authority, more recent analyses cast doubt on that interpretation.
  3. Innovative experimental approaches are allowing psychologists to address ethical concerns about Milgram?s original experiments and tackle pressing questions about conformity and power.

In 1961 Stanley Milgram embarked on a research program that would change psychology forever. Fueled by a desire to understand how ordinary Germans had managed to participate in the horrors of the Holocaust, Milgram decided to investigate when and why people obey authority. To do so, he developed an ingenious experimental paradigm that revealed the surprising degree to which ordinary individuals are willing to inflict pain on others.

Half a century later Milgram?s obedience studies still resonate. They showed that it does not take a disturbed personality to harm others. Healthy, well-adjusted people are willing to administer lethal electric shocks to another person when told to do so by an authority figure. Milgram?s findings convulsed the world of psychology and horrified the world at large. His work also left pressing questions about the nature of conformity unanswered. Ethical concerns have prompted psychologists to spend decades struggling to design equally powerful experiments without inflicting distress on the participants.

Post-spill, GOP still pushes 'Drill, baby, drill' (AP)

WASHINGTON ? It's still "drill, baby, drill." After the nation's largest offshore oil spill and a series of pipeline breaks, Republican presidential candidates are pushing an aggressive policy of oil and gas drilling that echoes the party's rallying cry from four years ago.

This time around, the calls for more drilling are sometimes running into another conservative ideal ? preserving wild places for future generations. The millions of gallons of oil that spilled into the Gulf of Mexico last year and the crude that flowed from pipelines into Montana's Yellowstone River and Michigan's Kalamazoo River have put a spotlight on the environmental risks of energy production.

But with jobs and the economy in the forefront, nearly every GOP White House contender has a plan to harness the nation's resources as a way to create employment by getting rid of environmental rules and opening up vast areas to drilling.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry says we are sitting "on a treasure trove of energy in this country." Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has said "we're an energy-rich nation that's acting like an energy-poor nation." And since former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in 2008 published his book "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less," he has touted more drilling in Alaska and the West to create jobs and drive down gasoline prices.

Some of the ideas sound like they're inherited directly from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the 2008 vice presidential nominee who popularized "drill, baby drill."

At the party's national convention that year, Palin told the crowd, "We need American energy resources, brought to you by American ingenuity and produced by American workers."

Perry, announcing his jobs plan at a steel mill in Pittsburgh this month said, "The quickest way to give our economy a shot in the arm is to deploy American ingenuity to tap American energy."

For some, no place is off limits.

Romney thinks the country can drill safely off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann says she would consider drilling in the Florida Everglades, if it could be done responsibly. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who also wants to open up the Arctic refuge to drilling, has accused President Barack Obama of putting caribou ahead of "something good for our country and our economy" because he said he won't drill there. And businessman Herman Cain believes the idea that high energy consumption and conservation are at odds is a myth peddled by liberals.

Voters will face a bright-line choice next year on the presidential ballot between the GOP nominee and Obama, who has taken a much more cautious approach to expanding oil and gas production ? so cautious that GOP critics accuse him of intentionally locking up resources. His administration did give BP the go-ahead this week to drill a new deepwater well in the Gulf of Mexico, the company's first since its catastrophic spill last year. The administration also has granted other companies deepwater permits in recent months.

Romney has said that the spill provided Obama "political cover" for policies to limit drilling, such as the six-month moratorium on new deepwater exploration put in place after the spill. Perry has called the spill "just an act of God" that could not have been prevented. Investigations by the federal government and the companies involved have blamed a series of faulty decisions for the blowout that killed 11 and sent more than 200 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

In an interview in September, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, defended the administration's approach.

"I don't think we should be drilling anywhere and everywhere, and I think those who propose it are wrong," Salazar said. "Drilling for oil in Everglades is not going to resolve the energy challenges we face as a country. What we need to do is to have a broad energy portfolio ... that does include oil and gas, but it has to be done in the right places and it has to be done with the right kind of review and the right kind of regulatory oversight."

Even within the GOP, not everyone shares the view of the primary contenders.

After Bachmann's comment on the Everglades, for example, Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., sent her a letter arguing that "the Everglades represents one of the most cherished treasures of the United States, and should be off limits for exploration of any kind of natural energy resource."

Conservation-minded Republicans have invoked President Ronald Reagan and the late conservative Sen. Barry Goldwater in arguing for the protection of natural resources.

"It's like the value of having a little extra oil trumps every other value that Americans have had throughout our history," said David Jenkins of Republicans for Environmental Protection, who told a House panel in September that it was disingenuous to claim that drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge ? originally set aside by Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower ? could be done with minimal impact.

William K. Reilly, the top environmental official under President George H.W. Bush, and a member of Obama's commission on the Gulf oil spill, has warned about the risks of a spill in waters off Alaska.

Public support for drilling dropped after the Gulf oil spill, but the change was temporary. In February 2010, two months before the spill, a Pew Research Center poll found 63 percent of adults favored more offshore drilling in U.S. waters, with 31 percent opposed. Support for offshore drilling dropped as low as 44 percent by June, after the spill. But by March of this year, it had rebounded to 57 percent in favor and 37 percent opposed.

And Then Giddy Helen Drowned in a Well

The cautionary tale lies at the intersection of didacticism and gore. Gruesomeness without redemption is gratuitous (e.g., the Saw series), and didacticism alone (e.g., the simpering 19th-century child heroine Elsie Dinsmore) is dull. Together, they?re magical, and the stuff of a blood-soaked yet pious genre that flourished throughout the 19th century. The typical collection of cautionary tales, including the best-known, Struwwelpeter, includes multiple illustrated stories, usually told in verse, about various wicked youths who meet lurid fates that match their sins with poetic justice; at the end, a narrator arrives to sum up the lesson for readers in rhyme. The formula?s broad strokes echo through everything from after-school specials to fundamentalist ?hell houses.?

Timberlake: I stole a golf cart with Ryan Gosling

Who knew Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling used to be partners in crime?

"In Time's" Timberlake, 30, recently stopped by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," where he reminisced about his days on "The Mickey Mouse Club" with former costar Gosling, 30.

"We used to do terrible things. We thought we were so cool," Timberlake recalled. "Looking back on them, they weren't as bad as I thought they were at the time. We stole a golf cart. And we were like, 'Yeah, man. We're stealing a golf cart!'"

All kidding aside, the future A-listers bonded after Timberlake's mother, Lynn Harless, became Gosling's legal guardian for six months. "His mother had to keep her job in Canada the second year that we were on the television show," Timberlake explained. "We were probably a little closer than the rest of the kids that were on the show just because we had to share a bathroom."

Though Timberlake said it's been "hard to keep up with" Gosling since their "MMC" days, he thinks Gosling has become an "unbelievable" leading man. "I think one of the best actors of our generation."

In June Justin.tv launched one of its first verticals, TwitchTV, a live-streamed video game portal and community for gamers. The platform has since taken off in terms of usage, and today, TwitchTV is expanding to the iPhone.

For background, TwitchTV features competitions of a variety of games and platforms with top gamers, tournaments and commentary. The platform aims to be a one-stop-shop for live video for ?eSports,? which Justin.tv says is synonymous with competitive video gaming. TwitchTV features live video game battles and commentary from titles like Halo:Reach, Starcraft II, World Of Warcraft, Call Of Duty: Black Ops and others.

With the new free iOS app, you can watch all of the content on the site. Users can watch videos in High Definition in full landscape mode; and browse by game, featured and more. You can also follow your favorite channels directly from the video stream, and see a list of the channels you follow that are broadcasting live. Plus, you can chat with your friends on the video stream via in-app chat.

Considering the success of TwitchTV on web platforms, it should be interesting to see if the gaming site can build a base of users on mobile.
