What to shop for in the post-Christmas sales

Eric Thayer / Reuters

Catch a breather while you can -- the after-Christmas sales are coming.

By Herb Weisbaum

Bargain hunters will find some great discounts in the days after Christmas. It won?t be hard to find sale signs boasting markdowns of 70 percent or more. But don?t expect retailers to slash the price of everything in the store, just the things they need to get out the door.

Dealnews.com, a popular website that tracks retail prices, compared last year?s after-Christmas deals to this year?s Black Friday sales and found that post-Christmas sales in 2010 were ?notably less exceptional? in terms of top offerings. In other words, while the prices will be good, they won?t always be great.

?You?ll see some of the best sales of the year on apparel,? says Dan de Grandpre, founder and CEO of Dealnews. ?Merchants want to clear out their winter merchandise to make room for the new spring items.?

The focus this year, de Grandpre says, will be on brick-and-mortar stores, not online sales. Many retailers, he says, will use their websites to drive shoppers to their stores.

?Sometimes it will be a coupon that you print and take to the store,? de Grandpre says. ?Other times it will be another discount on top of the lowest prices available at the store.?

For example, last year on Dec. 26 Gap gave an extra 50 percent off all sale items in the store until noon. Some of the items were already marked down 50 or 60 percent.

Video games also go on sale right after Christmas, even the most recent titles.

?Some of the video game prices we saw last year right after Christmas were the best prices all year, and we?re expecting that again this year,? de Grandpre says.

Is there anything you should avoid buying? You might want to wait on electronics. Dealnews says the markdowns on electronics tend to be so-so right after Christmas. Closeout prices on TVs, laptops and GPS units usually hit early in the new year.

You can also expect another round of clothing sales in January. That?s when you?ll find the biggest discounts on winter apparel.

ConsumerMan Tip: As always, it?s the final price -- not the ?percentage off? -- that matters. Take the time to use a price shopping website to find out if that sale price is really as good as it seems.

Will you be shopping the after-Christmas sales?

Strong holiday spending is helping the economy end the year on a high note. Retail sales are higher than this time last year and online holiday sales have reportedly hit $32 billion. CNBC's Ron Insana discusses.

Action Movie FX App is Awesome, Free Fun (Mashable)

[brightcove video="1344414576001 " /] Admit it, you've always wanted to be an action star. I mean, who wouldn't want to effortlessly dodge flying cars, helicopters and missiles? Now, thanks to action auteur J.J. Abrams's new free app, Action Movie FX, and a little help from your iPhone, you can.

[More from Mashable: 1976 Letter from Potential Partner Calls Steve Jobs a ?Joker? [VIDEO]]

The app launched in Apple's App Store just a day after Abrams big-screen actioner Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol hit theaters. Abram's Bad Robot produced and Brad Bird directed (and Mashable hit the red carpet premiere). Included effects are "inspired by" the film. It's obviously designed to appeal those who would not only love to see Tom Cruise's latest film, but wouldn't mind starring in it too.

Action Movie FX [iTunes link] is an incredibly simple app that accomplishes an impressive feat: It puts you in the middle of the action. Here's how it works: You open the app and select one of two free action effects: Missile Attack and Car Smash. You can purchase additional effects for 99 cents apiece. After you've selected the scene, you shoot a short video. The apps offers some guidance and how and where to shoot (shoot over flat surface if you want the missile to land properly). It also offers a handy screen overlay that shows you approximately where the effect will occur in your clip.

[More from Mashable: 6 Crazy Tech Predictions for 2012]

It's also helpful if you have someone else hold the camera. All they have to do is hit the big red record button, hold the camera steady and record. I'd suggest recording a minute or less since most of the effects are pretty brief. Once the video is recorded, Action Movie FX offers an effects slider that lets you adjust where in your recording to start the effect. Next, you process the film and preview. You can still go back and adjust the timing until the effect hits at just the right moment.

The final product is a hoot -- the effects overlay is near perfect. You can save locally to your own camera roll, email, or share via Facebook.

The app requires iOS 4.3 or later and works with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi and iPad 2.

I made my own brief effects-laden film (and could have done a better job positioning the camera), and I encourage you iPhone owners to do the same. If you do make your own video, we'll make an exception to our "no HTML" rule if you'll paste the link to it in the comments below, so we all can enjoy your artistry.

Lawyer: Portugal denies US appeal for fugitive

Portugal's Supreme Court has refused a request from the U.S. to extradite American fugitive George Wright, his lawyer said Thursday.

Wright's lawyer Manuel Luis Ferreira said the court rejected an appeal by the U.S. against a lower court's decision that denied extradition a month ago.

"The Supreme Court has denied the appeal," Ferreira told The Associated Press. "They notified me today."

The U.S. can now appeal to Portugal's Constitutional Court if it chooses to.

Ferreira said he did not have details of the ruling. In Portugal, extradition cases are conducted in secret. Ferreira said Wright intends to remain in Portugal.

A Lisbon judge decided against Wright's extradition in November, two months after he was captured in Portugal following four decades on the run.

The U.S. Justice Department filed an appeal less than two weeks later.

Supreme Court officials weren't available to comment after office hours Thursday, and the U.S. Justice Department did not immediately reply to an email seeking comment.

The lower court judge had ruled that Wright, 68, had become a Portuguese citizen and that the statute of limitations on his 15- to 30-year sentence for a robbery-murder in New Jersey had expired, according to Ferreira.

Wright, now called Jorge Luis dos Santos after changing his identity, is married to a Portuguese woman and has two grown children. They have lived near Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, since 1993.

Wright was accused of gunning down Walter Patterson during a 1962 gas station robbery in the U.S.

Patterson's daughter, Ann Patterson, 63, Thursday said about the Lisbon court ruling, "I'm surprised; I wouldn't know what else to say about it."

He and others then hijacked a plane in 1972 from the U.S. to Algeria along with other Black Liberation Army militants. He was captured in Portugal after his U.S. fingerprint matched one in Portugal's database of prints for all citizens.

Wright's fugitive odyssey began when he broke out of Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, N.J., on Aug. 19, 1970, and made his way to Detroit, where he joined the Black Liberation Army. Dressed as a priest, he hijacked a Delta flight to Miami with four others, using handguns they sneaked on the plane.

After releasing the plane's 86 passengers for $1 million, the hijackers forced the plane to fly to Boston, then to Algeria, where they sought asylum.

Algeria gave the money and plane back to the U.S., and Wright and his comrades went underground, settling in France. The others were captured and convicted of hijacking in Paris, but radical French sympathizers helped Wright escape to Portugal.

Wright met his future wife, Maria do Rosario Valente, in Lisbon in 1978. The couple moved in the early 1980s to Guinea-Bissau, a former Portuguese colony, where Wright lived openly using his real name and socialized with U.S. diplomats and embassy personnel who told The Associated Press they were unaware of his past.

Guinea-Bissau granted him political asylum in the 1980s, made him a citizen and gave him the new name Jose Luis Jorge dos Santos, complete with fake names for his parents.

Wright then got Portuguese citizenship through his 1991 marriage to a Portuguese woman. His identity from Guinea-Bissau was accepted by Portugal when it granted him citizenship, according to his lawyer.

He and his wife moved back to Portugal in 1993 to the tiny town of Almocageme, 28 miles (45 kilometers) from Lisbon. Wright then worked a series of jobs ? as a painter, a nightclub bouncer and a barbecue chicken restaurant manager ? as they raised two children.

Nokia ready to start shipping Lumias to Launchpad developers

Things were a lot less clear back in early 2011 when Nokia announced it would abandon its burning platform for Windows Phone 7. Amidst that uncertainty, Espoo pledged to give select developers an E7 as well as a mystery device running Redmond's bits in the near future. The company's now making good on the latter part of that promise, informing those registered under its Launchpad program that their gratis hardware is ready to ship. Kindly forwarded by a tipster is email proof (seen after the break), which in non-redacted form would provide instructions for procuring a complimentary Lumia 800. Previous whispers suggested the Lumia 710 will also be part of the scheme, so your mileage may vary. Still, a free handset is better than none -- or at the very least a Nokla, right?

[Thanks, Jota]

(AP) ? A woman grieving the shooting deaths of her son and granddaughter is now trying to come to grips with news that one of the accused is a longtime family friend whom the 7-year-old victim affectionately called "Uncle Mike."

Michael Bell, 21, played high school football with Jeremy Crane and spent many weekends at the Crane family's ranch-style home in suburban Indianapolis. The family stood by Bell even during his 2008 trial for raping a classmate, which ended in an acquittal.

On Wednesday, Bell and another man were formally charged in the deaths of Crane, 21, and his niece, Kyleigh Crane.

Cathy Crane, Jeremy's mother and Kyleigh's grandmother, found the bodies Dec. 12 after returning home from work. She said family members had not had any falling out with Bell and are stunned about his alleged involvement in the killings.

"We're not taking it very well," she said, her voice cracking.

Bell and Jeremy Priel, 25, were scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on two counts of murder, two counts of felony murder, one count of robbery and two handgun-related charges. Neither man has been assigned an attorney.

Prosecutor Terry Curry said Bell gave a statement to police that places both Bell and Priel in the Crane's house the day of the killings. However, Curry said authorities are awaiting the results of a forensic test to help determine which of the suspects fired the fatal shots.

For now, each man is pointing at the other, giving conflicting versions of what happened, Cumberland Police Chief Michael Crooke said.

A probable cause affidavit filed Wednesday along with the formal charges says a surveillance camera filmed the pair boarding a city bus not long after the slayings. One of the men is seen trying to wipe his prints off of a gun, according to the filing.

The affidavit states that a 9-millimeter handgun used in the slayings was found in the home of one of Bell's aunts, in a bedroom used by a woman witnesses said Bell was romantically involved with.

One man carried a loaded backpack onto the bus and the other a jumble of bulky items wrapped in a blanket, authorities allege. Police believe the backpack and blanket were filled with electronic games and other items stolen from the Crane's ranch-style home.

Prosecutors allege Bell showed little emotion as he watched television reports of the killings from his aunt's house, according to witness statements.

Cathy Crane said her son and Bell met in the eighth-grade and became close friends who later played on the same high school football team. They spent weekends together horsing around at she and her husband David's home in Cumberland, a town on Indianapolis' far east side where urban sprawl gives way to farm fields.

The family provided Bell unwavering support during his rape trial, she said. He was also charged with criminal confinement, battery, criminal trespass and criminal mischief in two separate cases in 2009 and 2010, but all those charges were dismissed, prosecutor's office spokeswoman Brienne Delaney said.

Bell remained close after high school and even lived with the Crane family for a few months this year, moving out a couple months ago.

He was such a part of the family that David and Cathy Crane's two grandchildren ? Kyleigh and her 5-year-old brother Brayden ? saw him as an uncle.

"He'd been around since the day they were born," Cathy Crane said. "Whenever they would show up for a visit and I said 'Uncle Mike is here,' they'd run inside to see him."

On the day of murders, she said her son had the day off from work at a cafeteria. He picked up Kyleigh ? who was off sick from school ? at his brother's house and brought them home to watch her for the day.

"They were two beautiful people taken from this earth. A gorgeous 7-year-old little girl with bright red hair and big smile that would melt her heart. And an uncle who loved her, who loved his nephew, his mom and dad and did anything for his brother," she said.

Tom Scott, a chaplain with local police who led a prayer vigil last week at Cumberland Christian Church, said it's the most difficult crime aftermath in which he's ever had to try to comfort relatives.

With the killings happening so close to Christmas, he said a Christmas tree was set up in the funeral home and Kyleigh was buried with a toy she dreamed of getting but never received in life.

"Christmas was very much part of the funeral. Kyleigh was buried with a Nintendo 3DS that she'd always wanted," he said.

Hormone Might Ease Menopause, Boost Women's Sex Life: Study (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Dec. 20 (HealthDay News) -- A hormone called DHEA appears to help ease women's menopausal symptoms and also improve their sex life, a small, new study says.

This is the first evidence that low doses of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands, can help sexual function as well as menopausal symptoms, according to the researchers at the University of Pisa in Italy.

The study included 48 postmenopausal women who'd experienced troubling symptoms for a year. They were divided into four groups: 12 took vitamin D and calcium to prevent osteoporosis; 12 took a low dose of DHEA; 12 were given standard hormone replacement therapy (HRT) of estrogen plus progesterone; and 12 took tibolone, a synthetic steroid.

The women's menopausal symptoms and levels of sexual interest and activity were monitored for a year.

At the end of that time, all the women receiving the hormone replacements showed improvements in menopausal symptoms, but there was no significant improvement among those taking vitamin D and calcium.

The study also found that women taking DHEA had a statistically significant increase in sexual interest and activity, with similar results for women in the HRT group. Sexual activity was also higher among the women taking tiboline, but the increase was not statistically significant.

The findings, published in the December issue of the journal Climacteric, indicate the need for larger clinical trials to confirm the benefits of DHEA in women after menopause.

"This is the first time that a controlled trial has shown that low doses of the hormone DHEA may be able to help women deal better with menopausal symptoms, as well as helping their sex life. The work shows that DHEA has potential, especially for those women who may have problems in taking more conventional HRT. But this is a small study, a proof of concept. What we need to do now is to look at a larger study, to confirm that these initial results are valid," study leader Professor Andrea Genazzani said in an International Menopause Society news release.

"This is an interesting result, although we must bear in mind that this is a pilot study with a small sample. Nevertheless, it does indicate that DHEA has potential as a therapy to help women deal with the physical discomfort of the menopause, as well as helping them sexually," journal co-editor Dr. Anna Fenton said in the release.

"We can't yet say that this study means that DHEA is a viable alternative to HRT, but what we can say is that we should be looking to do larger studies to confirm these initial results," she added.
