Microsoft's CES 2013 floor space sells in record time

Microsoft may not be so hot on CES these days, but that doesn't mean other companies aren't lined up for prime floor real estate. According to sources over at CNET, Redmond's booth space was sold to Dish and Chinese electronics manufacturer Hisense in about 45 minutes. Not word on whether an exuberant Ryan Seacrest is part of the package.

Yes, Moses flew to Japan on a spaceship and died there

Yes, Moses flew to Japan on a spaceship and died thereYou may remember that Jesus Christ walked through Siberia to die in Japan, but did you know that Moses skipped the cross-continental jaunt and took a spacecraft instead? Also, were you aware that his tomb is now a tourist trap?

At Mount Houdatsu in Japan's western Ishikawa Prefecture, intrepid travelers can find the Tomb of Moses. After showing the 10 Commandment to the Israelites, some manner of divine UFO deposited Moses in Japan, where he lived to the ripe old age of 583. Also, the Romans were somehow involved. It's all very complex.

According to the fantastically apocryphal Takenouchi Documents (which we talked about previously here) Moses dropped off a new set of 10 Commandments in Japan after hanging out on Mount Sinai. Here they are ? be sure to amend your theology textbooks:

Yes, Moses flew to Japan on a spaceship and died there

1. Thou shalt worship the gods of Heavenly Omoya Japan
2. Thou shalt worship the Omuya Hitsuki Emperor
3. Thou shalt not disobey the Sun Kami, for if thee do thou willst be smited
4. Thou shalt not disobey the law of the emperor of the Heavenly Omoya
5. Thou shalt not disobey the emperor of the Omoya
6. Thou shalt protect the law of the five races of Ajiti
7. Thou shalt not disobey the law of the Omoya of the Ajitikunists, the decided law of Ajitikuni
8. Thou shalt rescue the red and correct the black of heart
9. Thou shalt inform thyself of the stories of other kami
10. Thou shalt worship the spirit kami - Twice, ?men!

You can also find the burial mounds of Moses' family near Mount Houdatsu. And if geography keeps Japan outside of your budget, know that you can also find Moses' grave in Kashmir.

Josh Hutcherson Is One To Watch In 2012

'I'm excited for 'The Hunger Games' to come out and see how that does and hopefully get started on the second one,' up-and-comer tells us.

It's no secret that we've been keeping close tabs on soon-to-be superstar Josh Hutcherson. After his noteworthy performance in critical darling "The Kids Are All Right" last year, followed by his casting in the coveted role of Peeta Mellark in "The Hunger Games," we are very interested in what Hutcherson is up to these days.

2012 is poised to be Hutcherson's biggest year yet, beginning with "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," co-starring Vanessa Hudgens and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. "Journey 2" opens in theaters February 10, and less than a month later we'll welcome the release of "The Hunger Games."

We're not the only ones excited for the big-screen version of Suzanne Collins' best-seller. "The Hunger Games" is holding steady as one of the most anticipated movies of the year as voted by you, the fans, over at our Movie Brawl.

So it's easy to see why Hutcherson is "One to Watch" this year. MTV News recently caught up with the 18-year-old to talk about his big year.

"2012 is going to be a really big year, I'm looking forward to it," Hutcherson said. "[There's going to be] a lot of press, a lot of traveling with that. I'm excited for 'The Hunger Games' to come out and see how that does and hopefully get started on the second one." Hutcherson also revealed that he hopes to one day work behind the camera in addition to in front of it.

"I want to get into directing and producing and writing my own stuff at some point. I'm kind of just tiptoeing into that as well," he said. Our "One to Watch" has mentioned actors such as Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Gosling as career role models with regard to the careful choices they've made in choosing films.

"It's all about balance; everything in life is about balance, in my opinion," Hutcherson said. "You have to do the big studio movies to keep people caring about you in a way, and also for me, I've been really fortunate. I haven't done any big studio movies that suck. They've all been good material and that's the most important thing for my career, to choose the right material and to choose the characters that I care about and stories I want to tell. So that's kind of how I've gone about my career since I was 9, more or less."

Check out everything we've got on "The Hunger Games."

What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It's time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012!

No. 1 LSU right at home in Superdome _ any dome

(AP) ? Jordan Jefferson remembers nearly every second of the last time he played in the Superdome.

He was the starting quarterback for Destrehan High School, and like so many kids growing up in Louisiana, was awed to be playing in New Orleans' football palace. By the end of the night, he'd led his school to its first state championship in 34 years.

"I've been in the Superdome quite often," said Jefferson, who will try to wrap up his college career with another title Monday night, when he leads top-ranked LSU against No. 2 Alabama in the BCS title game. "I mean, it's something that I would call a sanctuary for me."

There's a bunch of Tigers who would say that.

The landmark structure just an hour's drive down Interstate 10 from the LSU campus in Baton Rouge is tantamount to a home-field advantage, even though it's supposed to be a neutral venue.

LSU players are hoping that 90 percent of the seats are filled with purple and gold, while the Crimson Tide would be content with a 60-40 split in favor of the SEC champs.

Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain went so far as to say he's treating it like a road game.

"I mean, I think it's going to be really loud in there," McElwain said. "Obviously we're a little on their home turf, so yes, it's an approach like we're on the road."

The Tigers are 13-4 all-time in the Superdome, winning their last nine games dating to a 30-15 loss to Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, 1987.

Along the way, a team led by current Alabama coach Nick Saban knocked off Oklahoma to win the 2003 national championship, and another led by Les Miles beat Ohio State to win the 2007 title.

"I think that our players need to understand that any time you play at a neutral site or any time you play on the road it's very challenging," Saban said earlier this week.

It's not just the Superdome that's been home sweet dome, though.

The Tigers beat then-No. 2 Oregon at Cowboys Stadium to open the season, and then ran their record to 9-1 at the Georgia Dome when they romped to a 42-10 win over Georgia in the SEC title game.

But the famous, saucer-shaped stadium in New Orleans, just a short walk from the French Quarter and the craziness of Bourbon Street, holds special meaning to so many on the LSU roster.

It depends a little on how you count, but some 74 players list their hometowns from Louisiana. Nine of them are from New Orleans, including Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu, tight end Deangelo Peterson, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and offensive lineman P.J. Lonergan.

"It's surreal feeling for me. It's everything I've hoped and dreamed of, and it's finally here," Beckham said. "The feeling, I can't even explain it."

The BCS system attempts to level the playing field.

Each team receives 17,000 tickets to the game, with the roughly 38,000 remaining divided among Sugar Bowl season-ticket holders, corporate sponsors and the 125-person Sugar Bowl committee.

But there's no way to know how many tickets LSU faithful have snapped up on the secondary market ? at least, until Monday night comes, and an expected crowd of 72,000 filters through the turnstiles.

"They probably feel like it's a home advantage for them," conceded Alabama safety Mark Barron, "because it's their home state."

Several of the Tigers besides Jefferson played high school games on the floor of the 36-year-old arena, where state titles are bestowed each December.

Others remember it as a makeshift refuge during Hurricane Katrina, while their parents and grandparents remember it hosting Super Bowls, Final Fours and Pope John Paul II, who addressed some 80,000 children there in 1987.

"It means a lot," said cornerback Morris Claiborne, LSU's Thorpe Award winner from Shreveport. "As a kid, you just dream about these type of things, of going and playing for a big-time school and playing good opponents. And this point here, where you play for a national championship, some people never get this moment in a lifetime."

LSU offensive lineman T-Bob Hebert has special memories of the Superdome, even though he's from Georgia. He's the affable son of Bobby Hebert, who had some of his best years as an NFL quarterback leading the Saints during the late 1980s and early '90s.

"When I was younger, I used to pop in those old game tapes, the old broadcasts. Sometimes I'd turn down the volume and commentate on it, and sometimes I'd have a pen and paper and keep track of the stats," Hebert said. "I feel like I got a good sense of how it is."

The home-field advantage for LSU isn't just in the stadium for LSU, but also in the fact its players can experience all that New Orleans has to offer ? the clubs and restaurants, the hot spots and cool places ? any time they want.

Trips to the Big Easy are a novelty for the boys from 'Bama, who have been forced to keep their focus on the game Monday night while a never-ending party swirls around them.

"We've played in some tough circumstances," Saban said, "and I don't think that that's something that you have to look to as a challenge. We know we're going to have to overcome adversity in this game, and the circumstance that we play in here is just one of the adversities that we'll have to have the mental toughness to deal with."

Perry joins Gingrich in attack on Romney (AP)

ANDERSON, S.C. ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry is taking it to rival Mitt Romney for saying he feared getting a pink slip during his executive career.

Perry says he doesn't doubt that Romney worried about pink slips but that his concern was most likely over whether he'd have enough of them to hand out.

Perry, the governor of Texas, cited South Carolina companies that downsized while controlled by a private equity firm Romney once ran. Perry said it would be an "insult" for Romney to come to the state and ask voters to support him now.

Perry campaigned in South Carolina on Monday. The state holds the South's first primary on Jan. 21 and Perry is hoping a strong finish will rejuvenate his lagging campaign. He is skipping Tuesday's New Hampshire primary.

Social Impact of Communications Technology | Softize

Topics: communication technology, social media impact, social networks impact

Introduction:

Technology has surely revolutionized the world of communication. Social networking sites or social media has made it possible to share interests and connect people across the globe without any geographic, economic or political barriers. Social media services operate as an online platform that can be used to develop social relations with people of interest. The majority of the social networking services are internet based e.g. email, messengers and online communities. These online services provide users means of interaction. Users can share activities, events, interests and ideas with people in their networks. This type of communications technology has made lifestyle innovative and alleviated the distances.

However, besides the numerous advantages there are some disadvantages associated with social networking. It raises many social problems leaving significant impacts on lifestyle and overall performance of the individuals.

Historical Developments:

Initially, attempts were made to develop social networks using online services like Usenet, LISTSERV, ARPANET and BBS (Bulletin Board Services). These services then evolved into America Online, CompuServe and Prodigy with added features and enhancements. There were many other services that somehow served the users as a way to communicate and share (Fraser and Dutta, 2008).

Innovations in communication technology and social media came when Asian Avenue was launched in 1997 with some interesting features. Some people consider it as a prototype of Facebook. But, using this service was fairly complex for non-techies as it involved html coding and designing custom pages. Eventually, developments in communication technology gave birth of the recent sophisticated social networking sites like MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc. (Fraser and Dutta, 2008).

Social Impacts:

Social impacts of communication technology or social networking are extensive. Let us take the example of Facebook; it has numerous positive impacts in our social life. Despite general communication, Facebook is extensively being used by scientific communities and research oriented organizations to spread the latest developments in science and technology (Lai and Linda, 2007). Students and teachers are using Facebook as a tool to communicate. As most of the students already use it, teachers have also started to familiarize themselves to maintain an effective and trendy communication. Facebook can also be used as a tool for searching employment opportunities. Social activists use Facebook for grassroots organizing (Dijk, 2006).

There some bad social impacts of Facebook and other social networking sites. According to Dijk (2006), the most commonly discussed issue is about privacy as there is lots of online information about an individual that can be assessed and cause some other issues. Most of the schools and colleges have banned the use of Facebook or any other social networking during school hours as it distracts the student?s attention from studies. Moreover, social networking works like an addiction and users spend most of their time sitting idle in front of computer screen. This has greatly influenced the social aspects of life (Lai and Linda, 2007).

Conclusion:

Social networking has played a great role in shaping the world as a global village. There are various types of services being used these days for community purposes to keep a healthy interaction among the people having common interests. Through time, social media has modified from simple forms of communication to the most advanced social websites that provide momentarily updates about the user activities in a network. However, there are some bad social impacts of using these sites like Facebook during school our office timings. Therefore, educational institutes and offices don?t allow these websites. We have also observed that long sessions of interaction in online communities have influenced the offline lifestyle and users are not well aware of what is going on around their town even. In short, we can conclude that social networking can be useful if used purposefully and it is equally important to maintain an active offline social life.

After Iowa, Romney now hopes to pull away in NH (AP)

MANCHESTER, N.H. ? Mitt Romney eagerly pocketed an endorsement from two-time New Hampshire primary winner John McCain on Wednesday and bid to convert a single-digit victory in Iowa into a Republican presidential campaign juggernaut. Unimpressed, Newt Gingrich ridiculed the former Massachusetts governor as a liberal turned moderate now masquerading as a conservative.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum sought to rally conservatives to his side after coming achingly close to victory in the Iowa caucuses.

"This is a wide-open race still," added former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who skipped the Iowa caucuses in hopes of making his mark in next Tuesday's first-in-the-nation primary.

Romney is the odds-on favorite to win the New Hampshire primary, and the endorsement of McCain, an Arizona senator, made his welcome in the state a warm one. ""The time has arrived for Republicans to choose a presidential nominee, a new standard bearer who has the ability and determination to defeat President Obama," said the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, a man with a demonstrated appeal to the state's independent voters.

Already, the Republican field of challengers was dwindling.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann ended her campaign after a dreary 5 percent showing in Iowa, the state where she was born.

After suggesting he, too, might withdraw, Texas Gov. Rick Perry decided otherwise. "Here we come South Carolina!!!" he tweeted. That primary is Jan. 21, and will mark the first balloting in the South as well as in a state that is part of the Republican Party's conservative, political base nationally.

Iowa, for months ground zero in the Republican race, yielded an almost impossibly close finish.

Romney emerged with an eight-vote victory over Santorum, whose grass-roots campaigning produced a late surge that fell just shy of victory. Texas Rep. Ron Paul finished third, followed by Gingrich, Perry and Bachmann.

A survey of Iowa caucus-goers highlighted the internal divisions in the GOP as it sets out to find a challenger for Barack Obama in the general election campaign.

Romney, who campaigned as the man best positioned to defeat Obama, was the favorite by far among caucus-goers who said that goal was their priority. Paul was preferred by those who said what mattered most was backing a true conservative. Santorum ran particularly well among those who said they were looking for a candidate with strong moral character.

Paul outpolled his rivals among younger voters and gained an estimated 48 percent share of self-identified independents, a group that traditionally plays a major role in determining the outcome of New Hampshire's primary.

"If you look to bringing new people in, the frustrated young people that Obama had, you have to look at my campaign. I mean that's where the enthusiasm is," he said.

McCain, who did well among those voters in 2000 and 2008, urged his New Hampshire audience to deliver "an overwhelming vote that will catapult this candidate to the White House." As Romney looked on, he said, "The time has arrived for Republicans to choose a presidential nominee, a new standard bearer who has the ability and determination to defeat President Obama."

Before leaving Iowa, Romney made the round of early morning interview programs, sounding at times more like an analyst of a race than a competitor.

"I think there's a real boost coming out of Iowa, not just for me but also of course for Rick Santorum and Ron Paul," he said.

At the same time, he brushed aside suggestions that his share of the vote in Iowa, less than 25 percent, was a sign of weakness.

"Ronald Reagan got 29 percent of the votes here and ultimately he was able to become our nominee," said, referring to the 1980 campaign that put Republicans in the White House.

He had a stiffer response to Gingrich, who refused to extend congratulations in the wake of the Iowa outcome.

"I'm sure he's disappointed in the results last night. But I expect he'll go on and mount a spirited campaign," he said.

Spirited might be an understatement, given the sharp escalation in rhetoric from the former speaker in the final hours in Iowa. His campaign purchased a full-page advertisement in the Union Leader, New Hampshire's largest newspaper, calling Romney a Massachusetts moderate.

Talking with reporters in Concord, N.H., the former speaker described himself as a "conservative leader for the last generation," and depicted Romney as something entirely different.

"In that same time period, Governor Romney was first an independent, then repudiated Reagan-Bush, then voted for Paul Tsongas, the most liberal candidate in the `93 campaign, then ran to the left of Teddy Kennedy and then became a moderate to run for governor in Massachusetts in 2002."

Gingrich accused his rival of including state-funded abortions in the health care legislation he signed into law in Massachusetts and said he had "specifically designated Planned Parenthood as a part of Romney care, appointed liberal judges to placate Democrats and raised taxes on business..."

"I suspect it's going to be a very lively campaign," he added.

Gingrich was briefly the leader in opinion polls in Iowa, before his support eroded under the weight of attack ads by a super PAC run by Romney's allies. Short of funds, the former speaker was unable to respond in kind, and declared he would run only a positive campaign.

Having jettisoned that approach, it is unclear how much money his campaign has left after Iowa, and how willing a separate super PAC set up to support him is to spend.

Personally, Romney was able to remain largely above the fray in Iowa's ad wars, generally running positive commercials while his allies took on Gingrich and other rivals.

Except for appearing at debates, Perry is not expected to compete in New Hampshire, saving his energy and cash for South Carolina.

In bowing out, Bachmann bestowed no endorsement. Nor did she say if she intended to seek re-election to the House from Minnesota.
