Hulu CEO recaps the year 2011: 1.5 million on Hulu Plus, no new owner

2011 has come to an end and somewhat surprisingly, Hulu has not changed owners. Following what has become a quarterly habit, CEO Jason Kilar has taken up his blogging pen to recount the company's successes. Hulu Plus has grown to include 1.5 million paying subscribers, which he expects will make up more than half of Hulu's business later this year, while adding 105 percent more content. Expect that trend to continue, with plans to invest $500 million or so in content next year. Of course, this may not do much for those dissatisfied with its ad-supported business model and windowing of content, but right now the focus seems to be on pleasing content owners, who he claims can profit more per subscriber with Hulu than any other service. Check the post for more details and feel free to speculate in the comments what 2012 may hold for the video streaming site -- our money is still on a surprise buyout by Lycos.

(AP) ? Market stalls and food sellers can only return to the streets at dusk to do business or else risk the wrath of angry demonstrators for breaking the nationwide strike. ATMs are starting to run out of money, and gangs of young men have taken over some highways and overpasses.

As Nigeria's indefinite nationwide strike over spiraling fuel prices enters its fifth day Friday, there are growing signs of strain in Lagos, one of the world's largest cities where most subsist on less than $2 a day.

At makeshift checkpoints, angry youths bring their hands to their mouths in a pantomime of eating, while others simply beat the sides of cars or break out windows to get what they want. Others continue to make do with what they can find as their meager savings begin to be tapped out.

"I've been fasting," wailed one youth sitting on top of an overturned police traffic post on an occupied highway. "I'm not Jesus Christ ? I'm suffering."

Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, has been paralyzed by a national strike that began Monday after the country's government abandoned subsidies that kept gasoline prices lower for consumers.

Overnight, prices at the pump more than doubled, from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter). The costs of food and transportation also doubled.

Popular anger over losing one of the few benefits average Nigerians see from being an oil-rich nation, as well as disgust over government corruption, has led to demonstrations nationwide and related violence that has killed at least 10 people.

Tens of thousands have marched across the country, with one mass demonstration in Lagos growing every day. There, organizers have begun handing out water and bread to those who gather there to sustain the protest.

Organizers say they want to keep the strike that started Monday going as long as the government refuses to bring gas prices down. A similar strike in 2003 lasted eight days. But there are limits to such endurance. The rise of gang-run checkpoints and begging at protests grows as the strike continues.

"Some of the Nigerians are going through pains and hardships because they can't go outside their house and source money," said Tony Ashiedu, a spokesman for the Association of Senior Staff of Bank, Insurance and Financial Institutions. "But in all parts of the world, only Nigerians can endure (such) pain."

Protesters themselves are beginning to show a rage that could turn to violence.

Abraham Overare, 49, said without hesitation he would overrun the presidential palace of Aso Rock and attack President Goodluck Jonathan if given a chance. On Thursday, he carried a sign that read: "Go Jonathan or die like Gadafi," referencing the late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

"After Friday, it will turn red," Overare said. "The boys are angry."

Some protest organizers have been making a specific point to calm angry crowds. As more than 1,000 demonstrators surrounded the Lagos headquarters of the state-run Nigerian Television Authority on Thursday, they arranged a line of bicyclists to form a human barrier between armed police and the protest.

That protest drew motorcycle taximen who sleep at night on their bikes, as well as one man driving a sleek black Range Rover.

Among those joining was a popular comedian who goes by the stage name Ali Baba. He acknowledged the demonstrations could fade as people grow hungry, but said the protests showed something Nigerian leaders had not seen before.

"Even if the protest fizzles out, the point is made," he said. "The government will know that we can do this. They won't take us for granted."

NCAA president pushes to clean up college sports (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? NCAA President Mark Emmert wants university leaders to help him clean up college sports.

After a scandal-plagued year, Emmert told about 2,000 delegates at the annual NCAA convention that it cannot happen again. Emmert used Thursday's state of the association speech to address some of the most tawdry allegations in the governing body's history.

Emmert urged presidents and athletic department leaders to re-emphasize the importance of playing by the rules, getting an education and restoring integrity to college sports.

He expects the NCAA to play a role in the cleanup, too. Emmert is promising tougher penalties for rule-breakers and a refined enforcement process to hand down punishments more quickly.

Exclusive: TPG willing to invest $1 bln in Olympus joint deal (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Private equity firm TPG Capital is willing to invest about $1 billion in Japan's Olympus Corp in a joint deal with Sony Corp or another suitor circling the scandal-hit firm, a person familiar with TPG's thinking said.

TPG has informed executives at Sony, Canon Inc, Fujifilm Holdings and Panasonic Corp of its interest in providing capital and expertise to help revive the maker of medical equipment and cameras, the person said.

Olympus has been seeking a friendly investor to make a minority investment and help revive its business after a $1.7 billion accounting scandal erupted in October, crushing its stock price and putting a big dent in its balance sheet.

Electronics firms such as Sony, Canon and Panasonic are keen on Olympus' diagnostic-endoscope business as part of their strategies to expand into healthcare, while Fujifilm is already in the profitable endoscope market, banking sources have said.

So far, TPG has not received any indication from these strategic suitors that they would be willing to work with the private equity firm on a transaction, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

But TPG believes it could be an effective partner by putting up capital, offering its experience in management, restructuring and the healthcare field, and by taking over parts of the company the strategic investor does not want, the person said.

A TPG spokesman declined to comment.

The list of potential suitors is long and was thought to include Samsung Electronics, though the South Korean technology giant ruled out on Friday any chance of an equity investment in the firm.

Sony, Canon, Fujifilm and Panasonic are seen as strong candidates to invest in and form an alliance with Olympus, attracted by its medical equipment business, the company's crown jewel boasting operating profit margins of about 20 percent.

Nearly all of Olympus' profits are generated from its dominant 70 percent share of the global market for flexible diagnostic endoscopes. The steady cash flow from that business has allowed it to prop up its digital camera businesses, which is on course to lose money for a second straight year.

MESSY DEAL

TPG would consider taking over the other less desirable parts of the firm to facilitate the deal. This could include the digital camera operations, which is in need of a major overhaul, including job cuts, the person said.

TPG is one of the world's largest private equity firms with about $48 billion of assets under management. It has considerable experience in healthcare, including a leading role in the $4 billion buyout of data provider IMS Health in 2009.

TPG is also one of several parties interested in bidding for AMR Corp, the bankrupt parent of American Airlines, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Olympus' medical business appears to have weathered the scandal but its stock is down some 40 percent since the fraud was brought to light in mid-October and the situation remains fluid, adding to the difficulty in getting a deal done.

Samsung Electronics Chief Executive Choi Gee-sung dismissed suggestions his firm, a global leader in smartphones, televisions and memory chips, would want to buy Olympus' assets or at least invest as an equity partner in the business.

"We're not interested in what others are already doing very well. Samsung will do what we can do better," Choi told Reuters on the sidelines of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

An executive at parent Samsung Group, however, said Samsung Electronics was interested in a more modest, non-equity alliance, though he declined to give details.

"We are not that interested in Olympus ... Olympus is in a very difficult situation. It may want more than just an alliance or cooperation," the executive said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Any major foreign investment in Olympus could run into opposition in Japan, where the firm's endoscope technology is seen as strategic, in part because of the country's high incidence of stomach cancer.

Medical endoscopes are used to peer inside patients to help diagnose cancer, ulcers and other conditions. Olympus endoscope technology also has strategic industrial applications, such as looking inside dangerously radioactive parts of Japan's crippled Fukishima nuclear power plant.

The Japanese government can halt an investment of 10 percent or more in a listed firm, or 1 percent or more in an unlisted company, if foreign ownership would affect national security, a regulation some say might be applied to optical technology.

An analyst in Hong Kong said optical technology was potentially of interest to Samsung Electronics.

"Optical technology is one of the areas where it has not caught up with Japan," said Hwang Min-seong, a technology analyst at Samsung Securities.

Olympus remains a thorny takeover target for potential bidders because the multi-national remains under investigation by police, prosecutors and regulators at home as well as by law-enforcement agencies in the United States and Britain.

Its disgraced senior management and board is also in disarray, with shareholders not expected to vote in a new board, including chairman and chief executive, until March or April when Olympus has said it will convene an extraordinary meeting.

Olympus' listing status is also under a cloud, though risks of it being delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange appear to be fading with public broadcaster NHK reporting on Friday that the exchange was set to decide to keep Olympus on its boards.

The exchange is likely to hold an extraordinary executive meeting to decide Olympus' fate as early as January 20, NHK added. The exchange said in a statement that nothing had been decided.

Olympus shares last traded down 2 percent at 1,243 yen, valuing the company at around $4.4 billion.

FTC expands Google antitrust probe: source (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. regulators looking at whether Google manipulates its search results to favor its own products have expanded the probe to include Google+, the search giant's new social networking tool, a source familiar with the probe said on Friday.

Google+, which was launched in June, offers many of the capabilities available on Twitter and on Facebook.

Google announced on Tuesday new features aimed at making search results more personalized. As part of the changes, photos and posts from Google+ will increasingly appear within the search results.

A Google spokesman, however, said that the Federal Trade Commission had not asked about Google+ or indicated it was looking into the new social network as of this week.

Google has been broadly accused of using its clout in the search market to shut out rivals, like travel search, by putting them low in search results. The source said that the FTC was roughly in the middle of what could be an extended probe.

The Federal Trade Commission declined comment. Bloomberg earlier on Friday reported the expansion of the Google probe, citing two people familiar with the situation.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center had asked the FTC this week to look at Google's decision to include information from Google+ in Google's search results.

Twitter had also protested the change. Twitter's general counsel, Alex Macgillivray, a former Google executive, said in a Tweet on Tuesday that Google's changes "warped" Web searches and represented a "bad day for the Internet."

Google said Friday that it believed including Google+ in search results was good for users. "We believe that our improvements to search will benefit consumers by better surfacing social content, and the great thing about the openness of the Internet is that if users don't like our service they can easily switch to another site," the company said in a statement.

Razer Blade spotted at CES 2012, now rocking SSD and functional trackpad (video)

Back in September, we got our hands on the 17-inch gaming behemoth from Razer. There was only one snag: the trackpad wasn't fully functional yet. There were screens in place, but we weren't able to test out all of the controls. Here at CES, we were able to get a quick hands-on with a final consumer model, ready to start dominating your next Skyrim marathon. As you may recall, the trackpad is offset to the right side of the keyboard so as not to interfere with your access to the essential in-game controls. Serving up quite a few functions, the tech includes a miniature web browser, access to control settings, macro key set-up, YouTube viewer, a number pad and a regular ol' laptop touchpad. Another difference between the model pictured here and the one we spent some time with is the inclusion of a 256GB SSD instead of a 320GB HDD which pushed the launch date back to mid January. The kit will still set you back $2,799 and is slated to ship later this month.

Israel, Saudi Arabia Hacking Feud Continues With Alleged Israeli Cyber Attack

CAIRO (AP) ? A top Saudi banking official on Tuesday denied an Israeli media report that hackers from Israel obtained credit card and bank account details of thousands of Saudi citizens, retaliating for an attack on Israeli accounts.

Talaat Hafez, secretary-general of the media office in the kingdom's banking authority, denied a report by the Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot that Israeli hackers were threatening to release the financial information they obtained if hackers continue to publish Israeli credit details on line.

Hafez was quoted by the Saudi online newspaper Sabq.org as saying that Saudi bank customers' financial information was safe and there was "no need for customers to be concerned" because Saudi banks' information networks were very secure.

Hafez also said officials had received no reports from Saudis about their data being breached.

The dueling reports underscored the hostile relationship between Saudi Arabia and Israel. Saudi Arabia does not recognize Israel's statehood.

The hacking issue surfaced after Yediot Ahronot's online edition, YNet, reported that hackers ? identifying themselves as Group XP, claimed to have gained access to 400,000 Israeli credit card accounts in what was described as "a gift to the world for the New Year."

Days later, a hacker claiming to be a 19-year-old Saudi national, using the pseudonym OxOmar, posted online the credit card details and personal information of 6,000 thousand Israelis and said he had access to tens of thousands of other accounts. He said the "Zionist lobby" was behind covering up the size of the initial leak.

Israeli officials said about 21,000 active credit card accounts in all were compromised. Banks said the cards were canceled and new ones issued.

It was not possible to independently verify the claims by the hackers.

In apparent retribution for the cyber attacks, YNet reported that Israeli hackers inside and outside the country had obtained the records of thousands of credit cards used in Saudi shopping web sites. One of the hackers, who was not identified, told the newspaper they would disclose the material if "the leaks continue."

YNet said it reviewed the information and can "confirm that at least some of the names on the list are real and match the rest of the details presented in the hacker' list." The website said it verified some of the information through Facebook pages and email accounts.

Over the weekend, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon described the cyber-attacks as terrorism and warned that Israel would "retaliate forcefully."

On Monday, he found his own website had been attacked.

"Cyberspace appears to be the new battlefield, and our opponents will not be able to defeat us on this plain, either," Ayalon said Monday.

Michelle Williams Refuses to Congratulate Beyonce on Twitter

Rihanna did it. Gwyneth Paltrow did it. Russell Simmons did it. THG did it. Millions of fans nearly shut down Twitter doing it. Congratulate Beyonce on giving birth, that is.

Michelle Williams, a member of Destiny's Child, did not and will not, however.

The well wishes have poured in for Beyonce and Jay-Z since they welcomed daughter Blue Ivy Carter Saturday, and Williams has taken heat for not joining in.

Her rationale is simple: Because she'd rather do it in person.

Destiny's Child

Kelly Rowland has not Tweeted anything either, FYI.

Says Michelle Williams to her Twitter critics:

"Let's get ONE thing straight... I do NOT have to say congrats to someone when they're NOT EVEN ON on twitter...ESPECIALLY when I talk or email them all the time."

"Or when I'll be physically present as well. My friendship with people aren't always for twitter. Respect that and get a LIFE!!! Enjoy this FINE day!!! God bless!!!!"

In a follow-up Tweet, Williams said, "This is a beautiful, precious, private time between two people and excitement is to be expected but NOT disrespect!"

And to end the mini-rant, Williams used this hash tag: "#churchdismissed."

Woman's got a point, you gotta admit. Amen to that. Preach on, MW.
