Slash Talks With Us About His Guitar App ? AmpliTube Slash

slashRecently, I took a look at IK Multimedia's iRig STOMP digital stomp box. In order to test it out, I used?AmpliTube Slash ? a version of the same company's amp modeling app that's based on the Marshall amp sounds of Slash (you know...Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver, Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators). The app sounded quite good, so I inquired if I could ask Slash a few questions about it, how it was developed and how he uses it. He was kind enough to oblige, via phone, from his hotel room somewhere in the world while I was backstage at TechCrunch Disrupt last week. Here is our ever-so-brief conversation.

Health Insurance Exchanges And The Federal Government - Typepad

?Stanley Feld M.D., FACP, MACE

Health Insurance Exchanges are supposed to be state-regulated and standardized health care plans in the United States, from which individuals may purchase health insurance coverage eligible for federal subsidies.

All exchanges must be fully certified and operational by January 1, 2014 under federal law.[1]

The health insurance exchanges in all states are not going to be operational on time.

However, Americans of all income brackets are experiencing the increases in 20 hidden taxes in Obamacare right now. The increase in taxes is supposed to amount to $1.2 trillion dollars.

The health insurance exchanges, are supposedly one of the centerpieces of?President Obama?s health care law,

Their formation is failing despite President Obama?s publicity.

If they are created President Obama will have a clear path to the Democratic Party?s cherished Public Option.

This will be a giant step to achieving a single party payer healthcare system.

Unfortunately, the single party payer system will in turn fail because it will be unaffordable for America.

Individual states and the healthcare insurance industry will do everything they can to undermine the success of health insurance exchanges.

Federal officials never thought they would end up running the Health Insurance Exchanges. President Obama?s plan was to dump this formidable and complex task on the states. Half the states have refused to participate.

?Obama administration officials are getting ready to set up and operate new?health insurance?markets in about half the states, where local officials appear unwilling or unable to do so.??

?So far, Governors of 13 states with nearly one-third of the United States population have sent letters to the Obama administration saying they intend to set up exchanges. Complete applications are due on Nov. 16, 2013.?

In other words, 37 states have not signed up yet. Once those 13 states that have signed up and start calculating their costs for setting up and running the health insurance exchanges I suspect they will also withdraw.

The Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sibelius? plan was to complete the regulations for the states to start the health insurance exchanges by January 1,2014.?

The Secretary of Health and Human Service has emphasized that states must meet her standards of transparency and accountability.

The federal government requires state exchanges to develop budgets and project operating costs, revenues and expenditures to the central government?s satisfaction.

States must explain how the revenue will be generated and how the exchange will address any financial deficits.

The federal government wants to set up the rules and require the states to execute these rules at the states expense. President Obama promised to ?fund? the exchanges for the states for two years. After that they are on their own.

The health exchange programs will be delayed because the government pledged to set up the health exchanges in the states that opted out of the program. It has not started to set up these exchanges.

Creation of Health Insurance Exchanges is a complex and expensive task. States are required to operate under a balanced budget. States cannot balance their budgets with health insurance exchanges unless they further increase taxes.

??Federal and state officials and health policy experts expect that the federal government will run the exchanges in about half of the 50 states.?

?My guess is it will be closer to 35 states. Federal officials are preparing to do the job. It will be poorly executed and difficult politically.

President Obama knows the public fears a federal takeover of the healthcare system. He realizes the public understands the health Insurance exchanges are one more step toward a federal takeover of the healthcare system.

The Obama administration does not want to encourage that fear by taking over the Health Insurance Exchanges.

Neither does the Obama administration want to alienate state officials whose help they need to execute the federally run healthcare exchanges.

The federal government does not have the manpower to run all these exchanges. It is outsourcing the work to private contractors.

We have seen the disastrous abuse to physicians by outsourcing fraud and abuse investigations to private contractors.

?The Obama administration has invited advertising agencies to devise an elaborate ?outreach and education campaign? to publicize the federal exchanges and their potential benefits for consumers.?

The Federal officials are hiring private contractors to provide ?in-person assistance? to consumers and to operate call centers.

President Obama?s administration has attacked Mitt Romney and Bain Capital for outsourcing of jobs.

President Obama is now outsourcing these jobs to a foreign company, while America desperately needs jobs here. This is duplicity to its highest degree.

He better keep it out of the mainstream media or Mitt Romney out to get it in the mainstream media somehow.

Federal officials have turned to the American subsidiary of a Canadian company, the CGI Group, to provide information technology services to the federal exchanges under a contract that could be worth $93.7 million over five years.

Kathleen Sibelius has demanded total transparency of state health insurance exchanges yet planning for the federal exchanges has been done almost entirely behind closed doors.

?We have gotten little bits of information here and there about how the federal exchange might operate,? said Linda J. Sheppard, a senior official at the Kansas Insurance Department.

?I was on a panel at Rockhurst University here, and I was asked, ?Where is the Web site for the federal exchange?? I chuckled. There really isn?t any federal exchange Web site.?

In New Hampshire, Thomas M. Harte, the president of Landmark Benefits, which arranges health insurance for 300 employers of all sizes, said:

?Nobody has any idea what the federal exchange will look like. There has not been much communication between officials drafting plans for the federal exchange and the people who will use it: consumers, employers, brokers and insurers.?

Administration officials have not set forth a budget for the federal exchanges.

?They said they intended to charge ?user fees? to the participating health insurance plans.

It is unclear whether the fees are subject to approval by Congress or whether insurers could pass the costs on to consumers.?

The Federal Government is not telling us what they are going to do. It is not following its call for transparent regulations.

It is pretty clear to me this will be one of many steps toward the destruction of the healthcare system. The healthcare system will self implode. At that point everyone will be begging the government to take over.

It will be impossible for President Obama to take over a business the government cannot afford.

A key to Repairing the Healthcare System is to decrease the outsourcing and bureaucratic complexity.

It is to let Americans be independent, own their healthcare dollars and their health and not be dependent on government complexity, inefficiency and rationing of care.

Entitlements do not save money!

Education in Morocco: A new school year with some new touches ...

By Issam Eddine Jalal

Morocco World News

Kenitra, September 8, 2012

Upon the new school year, the minister of education has made a few statements about some fundamental changes that would alter the educational system in Morocco. However, most of these changes have not been well received by the general public, especially teachers and people who work in the field of education. In fact, some of these modifications have been labeled as a cluster of rushed-out and irresponsible decisions made at the last minute without any consultation with other partners in the field.

However, the most notorious change the minister has made in his latest statement was prohibiting teachers and inspectors of the public sector to work in the private schools. This statement has created a huge buzz among the general public and while it sat well with some people, others have not been able to digest the idea. The decision has been mainly made due the complaints of parents who claim that private schools ?over-use? teachers of the public sector, which affects the teachers? performance in public schools. In other words, the common belief is that teachers work hard in private schools while they rest in public schools.

Regardless of all the implications of such decision, there are some complications that would arise immediately after putting such statement to work. For starters, Moroccan private schools use up to 90% of the public working force. This means that starting from tomorrow, most public schools will have no staff to work with, particularly teachers and inspectors. Therefore, this will ultimately lead to a huge crisis in most if not all public schools in Morocco.

This leads me to the question that many people including myself have been pondering about; it is the utterly bad timing of such proclamations. It would seem less baffling if the minister made this decision at least six months ago. This way, he would have given the private sector a chance to manage their business by finding alternatives and recruiting new staff members. Now, one can only imagine the mayhem that will catch up with private schools all over the country.

However, the premise behind prohibiting teachers from working in the private sector is not that convincing. It must be noted that a great number of teachers work in private schools to improve their income, and not because they are fond of the job. Hence, it is a socioeconomic need that has created this whole situation. Granted, there are some greedy teachers who have a decent income and they still work in different private institutions, but those are the bad apples that exist in any sector or domain, besides, they make an exception. However, the majority feel hard-pressed to look for another source of income to insure a decent life style.

Let me go back to the point why I think such a decision proves to be less convincing and less effective. The minister and all people who share his view seem to think that working in private institutions is what hinders the quality of education in public schools from reaching a better level. This is surprisingly na?ve because private schools are official institutions that work within regulations and are known to the public and the government. There are other institutions however, that work in the dark such as kindergartens and other private institutions that provide services for teachers who wish to give private lessons. What about other teachers who give students evening classes at home? Even worse, what kind of law or regulation would stop some teachers from putting so little efforts in class to force their students to take evening classes? So, it seems that even with such decision, teachers who feel the need to give private lessons, are going to find multiple ways to have access to that. Perhaps, a far-reaching change would have helped more than these small touches that barely stroke the surface of the issue.

Another motivation that has been attributed to reason why the minister decided to go on this route is trying to give an opportunity to bachelor?s and master?s degree graduates to find positions within Moroccan private schools. Perhaps, it is a noble gesture to soak up a great deal of joblessness in Morocco. However, I am very skeptical about the success of this move because I simply believe that no private school would accept to employ inexperienced people, especially in the field of education. Ironically, the parents who were shouting about their students not getting a proper education in public school will also be complaining about employing incompetent teachers and educators in private schools.

In order for these bachelor?s and master?s degree holders to find their way into such private institutions, they need training which I don?t think either the private sector or the public sector are ready to invest on. Hence, I am inclined to rule this idea out because it doesn?t seem logical enough to anyone who has the least experience in the field of education.

All in all, it seems obvious by now that all the superficial decisions and insignificant modifications are never going to improve our educational system on any level; on the contrary, it will just add salt to the wounds that this field has been plagued with for decades. I think that a radical change that takes into account the overall situation of educators as well as the needs of students is the only strategy that can lift education in Morocco from its despicable state. If we are to improve this country, we need a solid, crystal clear strategy that puts the teacher?s and student?s interests and concerns above all matters.

NFL pledges $30 million for medical research

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL has pledged $30 million for medical research to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health.

Commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday announced the donation to the foundation, which helps raise private funding for the NIH, the nation's leading medical research agency.

The same day the grant was announced, researchers published a study indicating that former NFL players are unusually prone to dying from degenerative brain disease.

The work, presented online in the journal Neurology, drew on a long-running study of more than 3,400 NFL players with at least five playing seasons in the league between 1959 and 1988. Some 334 had died by the end of 2007, the cutoff for the study.

Researchers found that deaths from Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Lou Gehrig's diseases, when combined, reached about three times the rate one would predict from the general population. The study did not look for chronic traumatic encephalopathy, but researchers said some of the deaths they counted could have been from misdiagnosed CTE.

The research funded by the NFL's grant is designed to benefit athletes and the general population, including members of the military, Goodell said.

Potential areas of research under the grant include the brain, specifically CTE, concussion management and treatment, and the understanding of the relationship between traumatic brain injury and late-life neurodegenerative disorders, especially Alzheimer's disease.

"We hope this grant will help accelerate the medical community's pursuit of pioneering research to enhance the health of athletes past, present and future," Goodell said.

The players union released a statement commending the donation.

"The players applaud the NFL's decision to independently fund a research partnership between the NFL and National Institutes of Health," the NFLPA said in a statement. "We look forward to reviewing their findings."

Former Vikings defensive end Carl Eller, who is the chairman of the board for the NFL Retired Players Association, said the donation would probably help future and current players more than past ones.

"My position would be that it could have been better spent with retired players," Eller said. "I think we have players that could benefit from that more specifically."

Dr. Stephanie James, acting executive director of the Foundation for the NIH, expects the grant to have a positive effect on people in all walks of life.

"We are grateful for the NFL's generosity," James said. "The research to be funded by this donation will accelerate scientific discovery that will benefit athletes and the general public alike."

The distribution of funds from the grant will be governed by federal law and policy applicable to NIH-funded research. The NFL will have no early or special access to scientific study data.

Easy Soup, Crockpot Carrot, Tomato & Red Lentil |

beach cottage easy recipe

Good morning, so you Beach Cottage guys like a recipe it seems?me too, who doesn?t really?

IMG_6475

?

IMG_6440

Now this is one of those recipes that you read and think yeah, whatevs, but trust me this is so easy you can literally throw it in and forget it, but, as ever with Beach Cottage recipes, tastes like you did a whole lot more?let us not though, let our husband?s in on that, huh?

IMG_6302

And this, friends, is tip-top Beach Cottage Surfer Boy food?.filling, nourishing, warming and easy to grab and eat when you come in from the water?

I first came across this about 12 years ago from a friend back in the Old Country?one day I was there around lunchtime and she about hurled this from store-cupboard to pan, and in 30 mins or so we were eating a lovely lunch?and it tasted divine?

IMG_6331

Her basic version involved a can of tomatoes, a shed load of garlic, a cup or so of red lentils and a chilli?and a lot of the time I still make it this way but as it has evolved and I wanted to turn it into a meal and I experimented with doing it in the crockpot I have added a few other bits and bobs?

This too is the thing that I often make in the daytime often at the beginning of the week for lunch?I make up a batch of this and know that the problem of what?s for lunch and often eating on the run is done?

?I love having home-made soup in the house, the methodical chopping of a few vegetables looking sad at the bottom of the fridge, that smell of an onion and some garlic in a pan as I am going about my business and more importantly it means that I am well fed, without any effort.

IMG_6305

Aside from that one-woman, all-week nourishing soup though, this is in high rotation here in my slow-cooker / crockpot, that girl on the side of my counter who saves my life (and the necks of the Beach Cottage Crew) on many an occasion?when I am feeling a bit frayed around the edges, there is not much in the house, the cupboards are especially Hubbardy, well this is my go-to?I firmly believe in the power of the slow-cooker in modern parenting *wink?throw something in there and not only are you done but you appear to be in control and everything else in life just seems to go so very much smoother.

Beach Cottage Recipe

Crockpot Carrot, Tomato & Red Lentil

4 x carrots grated

1 x cup red lentils

6 cups stock

red chilli to your taste (fresh or chilli flakes)

1 can tomatoes

salt & pepper

2-3 garlic cloves finely chopped

1 leek or 1 onion

a lug or two of vinegar

1 tsp fresh ginger grated

grated cheese & extra virgin to top

IMG_6445

1. add all ingredients to crockpot / slow cooker

2. cook on high 4-5 hours or low 8 hours

3. serve with bread and topped with cheese & drizzled extra virgin

Beach Cottage Recipe Notes **stove top version much the same, throw veggies into a pan to sweat for 5 or so mins with lid on and then add stock and lentils, bring to boil and simmer for 30 mins? **this is great store-cupboard food just with the onion, lentils and can of tomatoes though really I always have a few stray carrots floating around in my space? **it may well be far too much effort in your life to grate a carrot, if so just chop this roughly *omit the chilli if you don?t like it hot, I add more for mouth-numbing tastiness? *this is lovely served with warmed Lebanese bread (I keep a stash of this in the freezer, pull out when needed straight to the oven)? ** a touch of garam masala doesn?t go amiss here **keep an eye on the liquid if you are making this in the slow cooker (I have a new slow cooker right now and it is cooking a bit hotter than my old one?so I might have to add a bit more water, you may need to do the same or lose a bit by leaving the lid askew)

IMG_6370IMG_6333IMG_6458IMG_6344IMG_6475

I hope you like the look of it ladies, it?s all around Surfer Boy food in this household?but I know that some of you who are reading this are heading down into those Autumnal days?if you are, the nights are drawing in and there is a nip in there air?well, just make this.

Does your crockpot save your life as much as mine? Love it!

Righto, I am off?we have a little armoire in the house?OMG she is divine, actually scrub that she is ****** fabulous and not bad for $150?more on that soon, if I can stop staring at her, stroking her backside and take a picture.

Adios girlfriends

Foreclosure Prices Soar More than in Six Years ...

The average foreclosure-related sales price in the second quarter ($170,040) soared 6 percent from the first quarter of the year and was up 7 percent from the second quarter of 2011 - the first annual increase in average price since Q2 2010 and the biggest annual increase since Q4 2006.

At the same time, discounts for homes in foreclosure or bank-owned sold at an average price that was 32 percent lower than the average price of a non-foreclosure home, up from a 30 percent discount in the first quarter and also a 30 percent discount in the second quarter of 2011, according to the latest data from RealtyTrac.

The data on discount increases contradicts recent reports based on surveys of real estate agents that foreclosure discounts, such as NAR?s Realtor Confidence Index survey, have declined to as little as 17 percent in July.

Dramatic declines in foreclosures are driving the price increases. REO sales decreased 31 percent from year ago.

?The second quarter sales numbers provide solid statistical evidence of what we?ve been hearing anecdotally from real estate agents, buyers and investors over the past few months: there is a limited supply of available foreclosure inventory to choose from in many markets,? said Daren Blomquist, RealtyTrac Vice President. ?Given this shortage of supply and the seasonally strong buyer demand in the second quarter, it?s no surprise that the average foreclosure-related sales price increased both on a quarterly and annual basis.

?Three straight months of increasing foreclosure starts through July may ease the inventory shortage somewhat in the coming months when many of these foreclosure starts translate into listed short sales or bank-owned homes,? Blomquist added. ?The increase in short sales of properties that have not even started the foreclosure process indicates that lenders are moving further upstream to deal with their distressed inventory, thereby avoiding the increasingly complex and lengthy foreclosure process altogether.?

Third parties purchased a total of 117,131 bank-owned (REO) homes in the second quarter, down 13 percent from the previous quarter and down 31 percent from the second quarter of 2011. REO sales accounted for 12 percent of all sales in the second quarter, the same percentage as in the first quarter but up from 11 percent of all sales in the second quarter of 2011.

REOs sold for an average price of $155,892 in the second quarter, up 6 percent from the first quarter and up 10 percent from the second quarter of 2011. The average sales price of a bank-owned home in the second quarter was 37 percent below the average sales price of a non-foreclosure home, the same percentage discount as in the first quarter but down slightly from a 38 percent discount in the second quarter of 2011.

REOs that sold in the second quarter took an average of 195 days to sell after completing the foreclosure process, up from 178 days in the first quarter and also 178 days in the second quarter of 2011.

Foreclosure sales accounted for 43 percent of all residential sales in both Georgia and Nevada in the second quarter, the two highest percentages among the states despite decreasing foreclosure-related sales activity in both states.

California foreclosure-related sales in the second quarter decreased 10 percent from a year ago, but still accounted for 40 percent of all residential sales in the state - the third highest percentage of any state. The average price of a foreclosure-related sale in California during the second quarter was $248,676, an increase of 4 percent from the previous quarter and also an increase of 4 percent from the second quarter of 2011.

Other states where foreclosure-related sales accounted for at least one in five sales in the second quarter were Michigan (35 percent), Arizona (33 percent), Illinois (27 percent), New Hampshire (24 percent), Colorado (22 percent), Wisconsin (22 percent), Minnesota (22 percent), Oregon (21 percent), and Florida (21 percent).

Foreclosure-related sales accounted for 57 percent of all residential sales in Modesto, Calif., the highest percentage of any of the nation?s 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas in terms of population.

Six other California metro areas were in the top 10 in terms of percentage of foreclosure-related sales: Stockton (54 percent); Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario (47 percent), Bakersfield (46 percent), Sacramento (45 percent), Fresno (44 percent), and Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura (39 percent).

Metro areas outside of California with percentage of foreclosure-related sales ranking among the top 10 were Las Vegas (45 percent), Atlanta (45 percent), and Detroit (39 percent).

Online Business Ideas and Home Business Tips: 3 Effective Banner ...

By Don Grant

Banner advertising has worked for many in the past and it is still working for both big and small businesses. What you can accomplish traffic-wise using banners is totally up to you. It almost doesn't matter what your budget is because you keep going until you make money, and then you reinvest back into your banner campaigns. It's possible to reach a large volume of targeted traffic often times much less than you would pay for more popular paid advertising platforms. So in order to get the highest returns from your banner advertising campaigns, you'll have to keep to a few things in mind. What we're going to do is talk about several banner advertising strategies that you can add to your advertising tool kit.

There's nothing wrong with studying and even emulating banners that you think are well designed. Pick a popular niche, or more than one, and then search on the keyword; after that you can look for banners in the top five or less positions. You can be confident that those banners are well thought-out and can use them for studying purposes. Think about it, you will be able to study the banners, and try to understand why things are done the way they are.

You need to make sure your banners stand out from the crowd. There are plenty of banners that are designed in the same vein, but the problem is that they are lost among the piles of other banners. You want your ads to stand out when you publish them on websites. An effective way to achieve this is to make them interactive and engage your target market. These ads can be quite lightweight but just as interesting as well. When doing this you will find that your banners generate a better click through rate.

You never know how all the people find your ad, and the page your ad is on could pop up in the search engines after they perform a search. If you place your ad on a site that is totally unrelated to your offer, then your conversions will suffer greatly. So it's always good, and won't hurt, to try to include your keyword with your banner such as in the file name, etc.

So there is no doubt at all about the ability of banner advertising to deliver highly targeted traffic. We do suggest that you don't hurry, and just be patient while you learn how to do this incredible form of advertising. And when the day happens that you turn some profits, then just repeating the same process and put your profits back into advertising.
