Andrew Tweed: How to Engage a Venture Capitalist: Lessons From Our Dealflow

We often are asked by entrepreneurs how we find startups to potentially invest in (in essence, our deal flow). The ways in which an entrepreneur might best connect with venture capitalists has been covered by a number of other VCs across the web, but we thought it might be helpful for entrepreneurs to put this question into context by providing actual operating data regarding deal flow for our firm. As part of our process, we keep a detailed summary of the industry, source and quality ranking of each company we evaluate in any given quarter. To put last year's data into context, we were introduced to the management teams of several hundred companies during the course of the year and invested in five new companies. We've been tracking this data for several years, and based on this, we put together three tips that we hope will help you engage with a VC.

1. Know What The VC Likes To Invest In

One of the metrics we track is the broad industry segments of the startups we review each quarter. We like to categorize startups by the industry they fit in, and as you can see from the chart below, our primary focus has been on five key areas.

As an entrepreneur it is important to know what categories a VC focuses on. The two categories that you don't see on our list are Cleantech and Medical Devices. We don't invest in these two areas, and yet we still receive requests to look at startups that fall into those categories. Take a quick glance at the portfolio and website of the VC you are potentially reaching out to; if you don't see any investments that match your industry, you're most likely better off spending your time engaging with firms that actively pursue companies in your respective field.

2. Know Where The VC Looks For Great New Companies

We focus heavily on which types of individuals send us the best deals and what the average quality scores are of the companies they send us. We break this out by source type and quality score based on our 10 point initial review scale. For an explanation of our initial review scale please see our prior blog post here.

Of our five new investments in 2011, three came from other VCs, one from another entrepreneur, and the last from our outbound efforts on AngelList. The takeaway for entrepreneurs: the way you are introduced to a VC really matters. If another entrepreneur, VC, or industry contact whom we have a relationship with asks us to look at something, chances are fairly high that we will look at the opportunity. Like a lot of firms, we do not do take many meeting requests that come to us via a cold email (inbound). While it isn't a guarantee that a VC will invest, gaining a "warm" intro will often get you the first pitch meeting. We recommend cross-checking your contacts on Linkedin and figuring out which of your colleagues or advisors may know a VC that you would like to meet with, then asking for an introduction. This simple act will pay dividends in terms of making it to the next step of a pitch process. If you don't have an extensive list of contacts, the other options include going to conferences, demo days, or using AngelList to get your foot in the door.

3. Know The Right Time to Contact (and When Not To Contact) a Potential VC

We try to get back to every entrepreneur with feedback. The vast majority of the time we unfortunately have to say no, but we try to let the entrepreneurs know our honest reason(s) for passing on their company -- at the very least they will walk away with one VCs candid objections and incorporate what we hope is useful feedback as they build their business. We also measure the days it takes for us to respond to entrepreneurs we meet with during the course of the year, and the days outstanding for 2011 are below.

Given the number of companies we see it sometimes takes time to understand a given opportunity, discuss it internally, and provide candid feedback to an entrepreneur. We have found that many entrepreneurs appreciate the constructive feedback. One thing we have noticed that doesn't work with almost every VC is frequent emails requesting to know the status of "where they are at" in terms of making a decision. If a VC really likes what you are doing, they will be quick to respond. Unfortunately, the common practice of many VCs is to go radio silent. While this can be frustrating for an entrepreneur, doing some initial qualification of the firms and the individuals you are targeting up-front can help mitigate against being caught in this type of void. When following up to check on the status of a review, we also recommend including any significant company updates you might have (closed X customer, increased revenue by X), or if your funding round is becoming oversubscribed and you want to give a courtesy note with the timing of the round closing. Nothing impresses us quite so much as execution and communicating progress to VCs while they are evaluating a funding round not only demonstrates the viability of the company's business, but can also engender the sense that if we (or any other VC) don't jump on a given opportunity, then we might lose out to another VC.

We hope this gives you an idea of how to think approaching and engaging a VC. Feel free to give us any feedback or ask any questions you might have.

Social Network and Moneyball scripter to take on the film?

Sony has announced that Aaron Sorkin (Social Network, Moneyball) will write Steve Jobs, the film about the late Apple co-founder. ComingSoon.net reports that the film is based on the biography of Jobs by Walter Isaacson that was Amazon's best-selling book of 2011. Ashton Kutcher will play Jobs in the film.

Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal said, "Steve Jobs' story is unique: he was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time. There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we're confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarizing."

Veganism Safe for Kids, says Lisa Dorfman, Director of University of Miami's Nutrition Program

Last week, I reviewed Vegan Is Love, a children's book that explains the reasons behind the choice to go vegan. It contains a page dedicated to the health aspect of the lifestyle, but most of the book is devoted to outlining the ethics of veganism -- how animals are treated on the dairy farm, at the circus, and in the testing lab. One read-through of the beautiful book would convince most people that a vegan diet might be appealing to many sensitive, animal-loving children. That's probably why the book caused such a fearful uproar in some circles. But it still leaves one question unanswered: Is a vegan diet a healthful option for kids?

I went to Lisa Dorfman, board certified sports dietitian, registered dietitian, licensed mental health counselor, director of the Masters in Nutrition for Health & Human Performance Program in the Department of Kinesiology & Sport Sciences at University of Miami, and author of four books on nutrition including the The Vegetarian Sports Nutrition Guide. In addition to these accomplishments, she's been a vegetarian since the age of 15, run 34 marathons, been a professional triathlete, and had three healthy pregnancies. So I figured she was a relatively qualified person to consult on the matter. She outlined three main points of what people want to keep in mind when raising vegan kids.

1. Make Sure They Are Consuming Enough Calories

"Knowing what your nutritional needs are for how many calories are necessary to support your activities and your growth when it comes to the case of kids is absolutely critical."

2. Find Vegan Protein Sources Kids Like
"Protein is magical in the way that it does a lot of things in the body. It helps with growth, repair, the immune system. It builds collagen so that your skin, your hair, your tendons - everything that sort of glues you together is in tact. It helps with enzymes and hormones. But protein is overestimated," she added.

"What's important about protein is to get the nine essential amino acids, the building blocks of protein. It's like having all the players on the field at the same time." She said it's important for vegan kids to get a spectrum of foods to ensure they get all of the essential amino acids. Soy products, quinoa, and spirulina are all plant sources of complete protein, but kids can get all the essential amino acids by "mixing and matching," or eating a broad variety of incomplete protein sources (like nut butters, vegetables, and legumes) as well.

3. Feed Vegan Kids a Broad Variety of Foods
"Get a variety of all foods that give you all the vitamins and minerals that will help you to use all that wonderful energy that you're taking in," Dorfman advised. "Make sure they're getting enough vitamins and minerals and omega threes, which are essential for nerve sheaths and our brain cells and to help protect our joints from inflammation, as well as good fats which are anti-inflammatory and help us to absorb fat soluble vitamins." Good sources of these fats and omegas include nuts like walnuts and almonds, and seeds like pumpkin, sunflower, chia, and ground flax.

Dorfman said that many vegan products are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals like calcium, vitamin D, iron, and B-12, but that supplementation is a good idea for both vegan and non-vegan children because a body's ability to absorb these nutrients varies greatly with the individual.

As helpful as these guidelines are, what does a parent do if a vegan kid is super choosy and refuses to eat some of the healthy foods he needs? After all, most adults have trouble adjusting to the earthy, dirty flavor and dense green look of spirulina. The average child would probably spit it out in a slimy green cloud of disgust.

Dorfman said that parents of vegan children, just like parents of omnivorous children, have three great options to ensure they're brood are eating what they need: getting kids involved in the food prep process, creating exciting food presentations, and "hiding" the healthy stuff kids resist inside foods they like.

"With any child, you want to make food fun. Make the food come alive. Make little eyes with the raisins. Plant-based foods are very happy foods. They're not negative smelling. I used to have candles lit when I ate with my kids, because every meal is special," Dorfman said.

As far as sneaking in healthy stuff a child doesn't favor, Dorfman had these ideas. "Muffins, smoothies, soup, and vegan lasagna are great places to disguise less appealing veggies or additives for kids who are picky," Dorfman said.

Snacks she recommends for vegan youngsters include soy yogurt with berries, almonds, goji berries, almond cheese with apple slices, tart organic cherry juice, and soy-based breakfast bars. She says to avoid genetically modified (GMO) foods whenever possible.

"When I first became a vegetarian 30 years ago, there were potatoes and bread. Now there's a whole world out there for vegetarians. It's wonderful," she added.

So in answer to the question "Is veganism safe for kids?" here's Dorfman's bottom line:

"The typical American diet is pre-packaged food that's concocted from compounds and commercially created food-like substances. The American diet is pretty scary," Dorfman said. "Basically, the vegan diet can be superior in ensuring more antioxidants, less saturated fat and cholesterol, and less of the toxins that have contributed to chronic disease in the 21st century."

Okotoks teen (Ali Poonja) places fourth in world public speaking contestCALGARY ? If, after today?s election, there are any failed politicians looking for tips on how to better persuade voters, they should look no further than Ali Poonja.

The Okotoks teen just placed fourth in the world for his ability to deliver a compelling and persuasive speech.

The Strathcona-Tweedsmuir senior recently returned from the World Championships of Public Speaking in Australia where he placed third in impromptu speech, and fourth overall.

The gab-gifted teen was among just a handful of Canadians who competed in the International Toastmasters-type competition which pits students against one another for oratory supremacy.

Poonja said there is a simple formula for a compelling speech.

?It?s all about clear thought and real emotion,? Poonja said. ?Emotions are key because you grab people through your emotions. If you?re passionate about what you?re taking about, then you?ll be emotional and you will be able to create that connection with your audience.?

Poonja said he is passionate about the topic that won him a world title: Muslim extremism.

?I talked about embracing pluralism. I talked about the Calgary Stampede actually, about how it?s fun, but also how it brings together different cultures. I also talked about the need for more moderate Muslims to stand up against extremism.?

Home Maintenance 101: Exterior House Painting Tips

As a homeowner, you only want what's best for your humble abode. Keeping everything in working order and good condition should be your top priority. However, due to the harsh weather and other natural and manmade factors, you may find that your home is showing signs of deterioration.

The exterior is one of the most important parts of a home because it is the most noticeable. Some people would examine the value of a house just by looking at its outer surface. You can tell if a certain home is well-maintained because the outside walls are free from molds and stains; the windows look spick and span; and the doors open and close without difficulty.

If your home's exterior suffers from chipping paint, crumbling walls and has an overall worn look, then it might be time for you to consider a major repaint project. If you're thinking that you don't have the money for it, then think again. There is a wide selection of paints and brushes in the market today and most of them are quite reasonably priced. You can even hire a professional painter to aid you in the process. You will find in this article some helpful tips when painting your home's exterior.

Before everything else, make sure that the materials (paint, primer, brush, sprayer, aluminum wedges, etc.) are available and ready so that you will have a continuous painting process. According to an Atlanta painting specialist, it's also best to clean the surface of every exterior before application to avoid rough and uneven areas when the paint is applied. Cover the glass windows, doors (if necessary) and other valuables with plastic sheeting to avoid paint staining.

As advised by Atlanta roofing contractors and other home experts, it's best to start painting from top to bottom to prevent streaks from appearing. In this case, you should start with the roof, next move on to the siding, then the gutters and so on until you've reached the ground. Before painting, make sure to add grit or sand to the surface floor. Doing so will prevent slipping accidents from happening.

A painting and roofing Atlanta specialist recommends that you seal off all excess paint materials after use as you can still use them in your future repainting projects. You can visit homedit.com/tips-for-painting-the-exterior-of-your-house/ for more home exterior painting tips or you can schedule a consultation with recommended contractors in your area.

Happy Graduation Weekend | Tahina Expedition

The primary purpose of our trip home was to attend the graduations of our two daughters. Their graduations coincidentally happened on the same day and time in two different cities. Karen and I had to split up and each attend a ceremony for only one of them each. The ceremonies were on Friday afternoon, so many friends and families would have had a hard time going anyway.

We held a graduation party for both girls on Saturday. This way many of our family members and friends were able to come. First we had a lunch party for just family ? with 22 attending, and then followed this with a party at a community center private room. We had cake and snacks and had the interesting experience of introducing the 22 family members to some of our close friends and family. We had the girls bring their caps and gowns and everyone got to have their picture taken with them.

Since it was Mother?s Day the next day, I made sure to bring some flowers for my mom. Of course, I brought flowers for Karen as well. I also brought roses to give one each to all the other mothers who were at the party. The only problem is that I forgot to give out the flowers until everyone was leaving. I think I missed giving some to a few who left early. Grrr

Some of our family came from as far away as Pennsylvania and the mountains of North Carolina. After the afternoon party, most of the family went to the house of my nephew and niece who live in the Raleigh area. We had an impromptu BBQ and spent another couple of hours before everyone headed their separate ways. It was a wonderful day with friends and family! A moment well worth traveling half-way around the world to attend.

Mexico cartel war?s latest toll: 49 bodies

Published: 5/15/12 @ 12:00

Associated Press

CADEREYTA, Mexico

Authorities struggled Monday to identify 49 bodies without heads, hands or feet to gain clues into the latest in a series of massacres from an escalating war between Mexico?s two dominant drug cartels, with increasing evidence that innocents are being pulled into the bloodbath along with gang rivals.

More than 24 hours after the gruesome discovery, officials had yet to identify any of the mutilated corpses found near the northern industrial city of Monterrey. None of the bodies examined so far showed signs of gunshots, Nuevo Leon state security spokesman Jorge Domene told Milenio television.

Though it was unclear who the victims were, it was the fourth massacre in a month. Mexico?s interior secretary, Alejandro Poire, said Monday that all those incidents resulted from the fight between the Zetas gang and the Sinaloa Cartel, which have emerged in the last year as the two main forces in Mexican drug-trafficking and other organized crime.

Some victims in earlier body dumps have turned out to be bakers, brick layers, even students ? anyone who could be snatched off the streets in mass killings that one captured gang member said were designed to ?cause terror.?

Poire would not respond directly when asked by The Associated Press if innocents have increasingly become targets.

?We don?t have proper identification of the dead,? he said. ?We have to leave that to the investigation.?

?We have to look deeper ... to know the motives or who could have been the victims of violence,? Poire added.

The yin-yang contrast of these two vibrant musical events throws a neat spotlight on both the forces that keep a chestnut fresh and the challenges facing a work that is only belatedly being recognized as a theater landmark.

Both shows are constructed around the trials of two couples in the throes of passion and? inevitability. In La Boheme, of course, Mimi?s impending?death becomes the engine for Giacomo Puccini?s rhapsodically romantic melodies, tunes that have left audiences humming for more than a century. In the case of Sondheim?s angst-filled duos,?the?clash of adult reality?falling short of youthful?dreams becomes the setting for two hours of what many at its debut thought was the?demise of the American musical.

As Los Angeles Times critic Charles McNulty put it, many initially said musical theater had been hijacked by Eugene O?Neill after viewing the dyspeptic, snarky and often laugh-out-loud hilarity of 20th century realism exploding the expectations of song-filled love affairs. The song ?Could I Leave You?? may be one of the most satisfying deconstructions?of a broken marriage in the musical theater. This production launched last year in Washington, played on Broadway and has been nominated for?eight Tony awards, including Best Revival.?

Real-life husband and wife team Stephen Costello and?Ailyn Perez ? dubbed the fastest-rising husband and wife opera team ? sing the star roles in the Puccini work, itself a rethinking?created by film director Herbert Ross.

Both works spotlight the factors that keep an established classic fresh and allow a new classic to emerge. The story of the dying Parisian seamstress nearly always teeters on the verge of parody, it is so well-loved and referenced. Yet, in this production, the hot young stars bring a verve and youthful vigor to the roles that make you believe all over again, although it should be noted that this is done without a shade of irony. This is a traditional yet compelling rendition of the chestnut and audiences were breathless in their bravo, bravoing. On the other hand, the Sondheim work, with its 41-member cast and 28-member live orchestra? -- nearly the largest to ever grace the Ahmanson?s capacious stage --? as well as multiple dance numbers and fantastic costumes, is a work that is only belatedly taking its place in the annals of music theater history as a seminal masterwork.

This is due in part to the complicated, moody music and lyrics, but in no small part to the sheer size of the production. TV?s "Glee," with its delicious ironic take on the musical form, may certainly owe at least a wink to Sondheim ? and the budgeting power of a broadcast network?is nearly what it takes to mount a show this ambitious. This is not a show for the faint-hearted?to undertake. And yet, for a work to take its rightful place? as a classic, this full-throated, pedal-to-the-metal production is what it requires.

Many in the theater lobby at intermission commented that they had never seen a production of the show before. Critics have nearly universally applauded moving Sondheim?s early work that much closer to its rightful place in theater history, at the same time noting that in these hard times for arts groups everywhere, this kind of serious yet ravishingly entertaining theater is harder than ever to find.
